Akron City School District

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Akron Public Schools serves students in Akron, Ohio and nearby communities. It has graduated great athletes such as Antonio Pittman, Chris "Beanie" Wells, and Matt "Rookie" Heisler. The school district is located in the northeastern part of the state and less than 40 miles south of Cleveland and 30 miles north of Canton. As of 2006-2007, it comprises 7 high schools, 10 middle schools and more than 35 elementary schools.

Currently, Akron Public Schools is the fifth largest school district in Ohio, behind the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Columbus City Schools, the Cincinnati Public Schools, and the Toledo Public Schools (Toledo City School District). The current superintendent of the Akron City School District is Dr. Sylvester Small, Ed.D.

[edit] Imagine Akron

Akron Public Schools is currently undergoing a massive renovation/rebuilding process of all of its buildings. Some buildings will be completely renovated, while others will be rebuilt. However, due to the declining enrollment and still-shrinking city population, at least 10 of these schools will either close or be relocated in a new school since the project's beginning in 2005. All of these new buildings will have community center features (which was part of the agreement) so the schools will officially be named "community Learning Centers."

In the original plans, both Central-Hower and East High Schools were slated to close. While Central-Hower did close in 2006, the East High School "cluster" was able to persuade the district to convert East High into a 7-12 facility and close Goodyear Middle school instead. For the 2007-2008 school year, East High School students will be attending school in the Central-Hower building. Two new schools will also be built, Helen Arnold Elementary (opened in Fall 2007) and a Science/Math Middle School to be built downtown at the National Inventors' Hall of Fame.

It has also been speculated that Buchtel and Perkins may also combine as East/Goodyear did in the future. Currently, Helen Arnold, Voris, Judith Resnik, David Hill, Mason, Jennings, and Voris CLC's are complete. Crouse, Forest Hill, Glover, Ritzman, Robinson, Sam Salem, East, Findlay, Innes, and The Science/Math School are under construction.

[edit] Election 2008

Hillary Clinton, a Demoractic nominee, had visited Garfield High School for a rally before the Ohio Primaries had taken place. She later won the state of Ohio.
