Akira Fujishima

Akira Fujishima (藤嶋昭? b. March 10, 1942) is a Japanese chemist, professor emeritus, University of Tokyo.[1]

He is known for his significant contributions in discovery and research of photocatalytic and superhydrophilic properties of titanium dioxide. While working on his Ph.D. under the supervision of professor Kenichi Honda he discovered the photocatalytic water decomposition (water photolysis) in the process in the TiO2 surface later called Honda-Fujishima effect. Discovery of self-cleaning properties of TiO2 by the group under his supervision have brought revolution in ceramic, glass, and other industries (see e.g., self-cleaning glass). [2]

Akira Fujishima was born in Tokyo. In 1966 he earned B. A. (Engineering), Faculty of Engineering, Yokohama National University, in 1971 he earned Ph.D. (Engineering), Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo.
