Ajit Bandyopadhyay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ajit Bandyopadhyay, also known as Ajit Banerjee or simply Ajit, is a longtime friend, associate, and narrator of Byomkesh Bakshi in the Bengali detective fiction written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Ajit meets Byomkesh in Satyanneshi where he states his goal of being a writer. Ajit is Byomkesh's best friend and they share a flat on Harrison Road in Calcutta until Byomkesh gets married to Satyaboti. Byomkesh then constructs a house which they share and in later stories Ajit buys an automobile.
His character has quite often been compared to that of Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes detective fiction and Sharadindu might indeed have moulded him in the same fashion. Ajit is a lifelong bachelor (though in the movie version of Chiriyakhana he is a married man), and like Watson, loyal, and an assistant of sorts.
