[edit] Wikimedia Canada

Hi there! I'd like to invite you to explore Wikimedia Canada, and create a list of people interested in forming a local chapter for our nation. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization, within our great nation. We'd also like to encourage everyone to suggest projects for our national chapter to participate in. [edit] Disaster movies to Disaster film

Hello there,

I moved the page Disaster movie to Disaster film. You may want to change your user page link to look something like this: [[Disaster film]]s. Just a thought. Lady Aleena 08:42, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IATA airline designator

Are you checking to see if the IATA code is either a redirect or listed on the existing DAB article? If so it would save me from having to look through all of your changes, see what was added and then do the check. Also, it is best to leave the defunct airlines in the list for historical reasons. Thanks for working on filling in the missing airlines, it is a thankless task. Vegaswikian 23:29, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport

Why has no one noticed the nonsense? Too many changes to that article. I have been watching and I am amazed at the number of changes. I have not reverted some of the nonsense since I don't keep track uf what happens there so I did not really look closely. I'm glad you cleaned this up. Hope you keep an eye on it for the future. [edit] Aircraft safety card

In the aircraft safety card article, there is a new scanned picture of an actual Qantas card, with a "public domain" tag. Is the use of that image acceptable? AirOdyssey 02:15, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Is there any evidence that the card is actually in the public domain, rather than being copyrighted by Quantas? --Carnildo 18:53, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
No. AirOdyssey 22:31, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
How about looking for one that is definitely in the public domain? The Federal Aviation Administration might have a reference card that's PD. Alternatively, you could find a regulation governing the contents of such a card, and have someone draw up a safety card for a fictional "Wiki Airlines". --Carnildo 18:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merge suggestion

Airo, Please check the history of articles related to flight recorder and note that merges between every possible combination have been suggested and extensivly discussed, resulting in no consensus. Shurly we can get along with articles as they now stand with hyperlinking enought to navigate between them. Consider please whether we might be spared from doing it all over again. Sure, help yourself! I just noticed, however, there is a template for flag icons which is much easier to use. For example, {{flagicon|Canada}} would give a Flag of Canada Canadian flag. Hope this helps! -- AirOdyssey (Talk) 04:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] LANSA Cuzco Crash

Hi Airodyssey, I noticed you removed one photo link and the cache refresh instructions. You also left incorrect wording ("here is another photo" where you removed the first photo). Can you please explain your reasons for doing that? Thanks, Crum375 17:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

The "incorrect wording" left behind is unintentional. And why did I remove the cache instructions? Because the Airliners.Net links were incorrect. There was a link to the JPG file, which Airliners.Net blocks like most websites in order to prevent "remote linking." They want the viewer to see the photo in its full context, with the name of airline, date, time, place, and full credits of the name of photographer.
I removed the link to one of the photos because the first one, with no airplane obstructing the view, fits better the context of the article.
I'd appreciate if in the future, you would ask before reverting an edit. Thanks. -- AirOdyssey (Talk) 19:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
The instructions that you removed explain to the reader how to refresh his/her cache to enable the display of the single jpeg image which is much cleaner/nicer. All you need to do is follow the instructions: you preload the cache once by clicking on the provided right hand link, then you can view the associated jpeg image for several days from your cache by clicking on the left hand link. This is a technique I use throughout my articles. By removing the instructions you disabled that feature.
As far as the choice of having 2 separate images, I sifted for a long time through many images, trying to illusrate what a pilot would see taking off to the west. The ones I chose seemed to me to show it best, each one in its own way - the issue is the runway environment and the terrain ahead, not the airplane. By removing one of them you removed a nice view of the rising terrain. Please, before you remove an image like that in the future, or disable a feature, use the Discussion page. You can make a comment or suggestion there, and I would be glad to respond. Thanks, Crum375 20:09, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Please keep in mind I was trying to make a constructive edit, while removing the clutter and keeping in line with the other Wikipedia articles. Did you look at other Wikipedia articles giving Airliners.Net links?
One thing is "to look nice", another one is to give justice to the photographer by showing an image with the appropriate credits, while having a better viewer experience, by not having to make one extra click to view a photo. -- AirOdyssey (Talk) 20:21, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for trying to be constructive. In this case, however, there are many articles that I can cite that use my cache-refreshing technique. The advantage is that you get to see a clear picture without clutter, which helps you focus on the content and message of the picture. In addition, if you looked carefully you would have noticed that the URL that you mention is included, that is in fact the 'right hand URL', which you need to click on once to prime/refresh your cache, and where you can get the info about the photo, the photographer details etc. It is the left hand link that gives you the clear image, and this is the one you removed. Please discuss these types of changes prior to reversion/removal. Thanks, Crum375 20:28, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Virtual bank - History section

AirOdyssey - The links in the history section are out-dated because those banks have now closed down. A virtual bank's identity is its website. If you feel that the article is not up to the standards please delete the entire section. I am a newbie and not much coversant in editing articles in Wikipedia, but, here is my opinion - when you talk about history of a virtual bank you have to mention its website. Otherwise you are better-off not talking about its history. -- Guruchimi 17:10, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

It's hysterical, I know! The two fictional addresses you see (bank in the West, client in the East) come from a Canada Post addressing guide. -- AirOdyssey (Talk) 23:58, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More about that cheque...

I added a note to your picture that U.S. checks are almost the same as Canadian cheques. This is the format for the MICR line on U.S. personal checks, with "/" in place of the routing-number symbol (on either side of "00005-123" in yours) and "#" in place of the account-number symbol (at the very end in yours), maintaining your numbers except for extra zeroes to pad out the routing number (9 digits in U.S.) and check number (4 digits in U.S.):

  /000005123/ 123-456-7# 0243

Also note that the format you used for the check number (#243#) is used in the U.S., but only for longer "business" checks; U.S. personal checks always list the routing number first.

The U.S. "fractional routing number" for this check would be: 0-512/000. (The "/" is either a real slash or a full horizontal bar as in traditional fractions. There is no "zero-padding" in this number, but I had to use "0" and "000" here for reasons too complex to explain.)

U.S. checks' date box is like that on your British cheque sample, except a little ways to the left (not directly over the amount). The "fractional routing number" is usually above the date in very small print, though on older checks it was to the right of the date. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RBBrittain (talkcontribs).

Preceding station   VIA Rail   Following station

Toronto-Montreal

Any way of getting rid of "toward Fallowfield" and "toward Aldershot". Both are irrelevant, if not incorrect. Peter Horn 00:57, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Would you rather change Fallowfield for Ottawa and Aldershot for Toronto? Or you want the termini to no longer appear? I agree that from Montreal, few trains continue all the way to those two destinations. AirOdyssey (Talk) 02:24, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
The Montreal-Ottawa trains end/start at the "new" station in east end Ottawa (just east of the Rideau Canal). It is the station that replaced the original one in downtown Ottawa near the parliament buildings. See Ottawa Station. The Fallowfield has nothing to do with VIA's Montreal-Ottawa runs. Likewise all Montreal-Toronto runs start/end at Union Station in downtown Toronto. Aldershot is beyond Toronto. Peter Horn 01:04, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Please have a look at the VIA Rail schedules, as per WP:V. NOT all Montreal-Toronto runs start/end at Union Station. At least one train a day continues to Aldershot. Same thing for Montreal-Ottawa. At least one train a day continues to Fallowfield. P.S. I know where the train stations in Ottawa and Toronto are, I've taken the train on the corridor more than once. That wasn't the point. [edit] IATA airline codes

Yea, the page does seem to take a while to load. It also seems to be progressively slower. So it takes longer to load then 5 pages that are 1/6th the size. I wonder if there is a bug in the code. Do you also see that? BTW, as the page is being filled in, I'm finding a lot of problems that we had with the old separate pages and with different data maintained on the separate pages, so moving them to one page appears to be a good thing for accuracy. BTW, this was discussed on the project page before I started the work. Vegaswikian 17:54, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Austral-logo.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Austral-logo.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:05, 8 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. OsamaK 02:05, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:FreefallMovie-Slide.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:FreefallMovie-Slide.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Indon (reply) — 09:54, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use disputed for Image:Airshow.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Airshow.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 02:23, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I am so SICK of explaining this to people - look at the talk page at Gregory Michael. I clearly explain what has happened. The bio at IMDB has copied what i wrote!! But you know what, i am so sick and tired to defending myself that i really don't care anymore. Leave the bio deleted because i cannot face explaining this situation again and again and again. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:SampleCarteBleueNationale.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:SampleCarteBleueNationale.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 20:30, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for responding. In this edit, the expression "unjust enrichment" appears to represent the author's opinion only and does not appear to be supported by other facts. Feel free to further discuss the article's neutrality on the talk page. AirOdyssey (Talk) 02:55, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
If the bank makes an error "in your favour" you have been unjustly enriched. Per the article Unjust enrichment is a legal term in English law and in several other jurisdictions, denoting a particular type of causative event in which one party is unjustly enriched at the expense of another, and an obligation to make restitution arises, regardless of liability for wrongdoing. I think that is pretty relevant and not at all bias. If the bank adds $1000 to your account that should not have been then you have been unjustly enriched and are responsible to pay it back!
