Aion (Chrono Crusade)

Aion (アイオーン Aiōn?) is the main antagonist from the anime and manga series Chrono Crusade. He started a revolution within the demon society, Pandemonium, when he stole Pandemonium's head and became leader of the Sinners and their operations. He kidnapped Joshua Christopher and Fiore as an attempt to bring about the end of the world.

Aion was a high ranking devil within the demon society of Pandemonium. However, he had a desire to fulfill his own ambitions so he recruited a group of demon followers, the Sinners, to lead a revolution to obtain Pandemonium's head. Aion was branded a traitor within Pandemonium.
Aion revealed to Chrono his plans to manipulate mankind’s frailties with Pandemonium’s head and the power of Mary Magdalene to reverse the position of Earth and Heaven, making themselves "complete". He ordered Chrono to dispose of Magdalene, which Chrono adamantly refused. An enraged Aion fought him, causing Chrono to lose his horns and be left for dead with Magdalene.

Aion, in the form of a bald eagle appears to Chrono, Rosette Christopher and her brother Joshua. Aion thanks Rosette for freeing Chrono before offering Chrono the chance to rejoin him, but Chrono refuses. He appears again in Central Park during the breach of the Seven Wings seal, in an attempt to capture Azmaria Hendric. Aion quickly dispatches Satella and Chrono before mocking Rosette, since killing him would mean killing the hope of seeing Joshua again.
Aion is later sighted in the underground catacombs holding Satella captive by a feminine devil worshiper. He reveals to her that he killed her entire family. As Aion advances to sexually seduce Satella, Rosette and Chrono arrive and hold Aion at gunpoint. Rosette pulls the trigger, but Aion disappears without a scratch on his body. As Aion and his Sinners begin the Ritual of Atonement, Chrono transforms into his true form and charges Aion. Aion gives Joshua the sword used to release the miasma, and both Joshua and Chrono fight. Aion leaves with Rosette after Chrono ripped his horns off of Joshua.

In Central Park, Aion watched as Rosette and Chrono confronted each other. Aion fatally wounded Chrono with his own horn, but Rosette used the power of her pocketwatch to turn him into his true form, serving as a form of CPR. Chrono sliced off Aion’s right arm and slashed him down the middle.
As Aion lay dying, he said the words of Christ, "Eloi, Eloi lema, sabachtani" ("My God My God, why have you forsaken me") before falling to the ground. However, Aion appeared in the series ending, revealing he is an immortal birthed from desire.

Aion's goal is to bring a "new rebirth" by infecting the world using demon matter, transforming at least half of the planet into a demonic habitat. He planned it by poisoning Pandemonium using massive astral line power. When Pandemonium began absorbing the astral line, all horned demons became intoxicated, and they lost their intelligence and instinct. Their bodies grew disproportionately and began to self destruct. To retain his power, Aion sealed his unwilling contractors into jewels made by Fiore. He attached his horn to a sword that he created as a jewel holder with the capability to nullify a "demon's power". At the very end, Chrono successfully killed Aion. During the final battle, it is revealed that a woman named Lilith(who became the core for Pandemonium) was pregnant with both Aion and Chrno when she was still human, thus making Chrno and Aion fraternal twins.

Aion uses his allies as pawns to further his goals. He enjoys inflicting pain and suffering, especially towards Rosette; suggesting a sadist tendency. He believes waging war with God and heaven is necessary to accomplish his goal.
In the manga, Aion cared about his followers and wanted the best for them, but he was also willing to sacrifice them if it would benefit his ultimate goal: total destruction of Pandaemonium and the “rebirth” of the world.
