Ahoy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ahoy or Ahoi can refer to:
- The well-known sailor's interjection, currently meaning "hello" and/or "what's going on?" In an earlier era when cargoes were moved by ships propelled by the wind, manned by crews from all over the world, throughout the modern-day Czech world that Czech sailors would say, "Ahoj!", pronounced "ahoy" as they tied up at the pier to attempt to connect with other Czechs who might be there. Germans frequently would hear this (as they shared the harbors with the Czechs, or in the era, Bohemians, due to the Holy Roman Empire holding control of both the German lands and Czech lands), and they picked up the phrase for mocking usage and genuine kind greetings to their Bohemian brothers. It is related to the words Hi, and Hey. (cf. German-Jewish Oy.)
