Zamil was voted out on 5th September 2004 during the rock show after delivering his rendition of Hoobastank's "The Reason". He thus came 7th in the show.
Zamil is also called the "aunty's favourite" by Roslan Aziz. This is due to his humility and selection of songs that include Andrea Bocelli's "The Prayer", Kenny Remy & Martin's "Suratan Atau Kebetulan" and Marc Anthony's "My Baby You" in the show.
He was eliminated for getting the lowest votes during the rock Show. His "The Reason" was much criticized by all three judges, although many viewers thought he did a decent performance compared to the other finalists. Many viewed that Zamil should have sung one of the classic rock numbers.
"The Reason" was nominated for the Song of the Year at the 47th Grammy Awards and also won the MTV Asia VMA award for best rock video. The song is Hoobastank's most commercially successful single, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks.
Zamil's renditions during MI include:
- The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli during the audition
- My Baby You by Marc Anthony during the workshop
- Januari by Glenn Fredly in the First Spectacular
- Suratan atau Kebetulan by Kenny Remy & Martin in The Classics Show
- Just Once by James Ingram during the 80's Show
- The Reason by Hoobastank during the rock show

In TUNKU The Musical, Zamil plays Malik, the 20-year-old son of Syed (Tony Eusoff), an aide to Tunku Abdul Rahman. About to go abroad (to England) for his tertiary studies, Malik falls in love with 17-year-old Fauzia (Doreen Tang), a Chinese girl adopted by a Malay family.
