All scholarly sources I've seen agree with Thucydides that the Agrianes were Paeonians. Alexander 007 18:50, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Langarus, King of Dardania
Langarus (Longarus) is the name of a Dardanian King as well. It seems there is a connection between Agrianes and Dardani, thus they are both Illyrians.--Getoar 21:20, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I know that the name Langarus/Longarus also occurs among Illyrians, but common names (one or two or even ten) does not prove that the Agrianes were Illyrians. I agree with those scholars who consider the Agrianes a Paionian tribe. Only sloppy scribblers would consider the Paionians as Illyrians. Scholars who know their ancient tribes know that the Paionians were not Illyrians or Thracians. However, if you find good references that argue that the Agrianes were Illyrians, you can discuss them. ---Alexander 007 02:06, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
I think this article should stay under Agrianes for 3 reasons:
- 1) Agrianes gets 213 hits, Agrianians gets 188 hits.
- 2) Agrianes is a direct transliteration of the ancient Greek form.
- 3) Most of my books give the name as Agrianes in English.

My count is 381 for Agrianes and 278 for Agrianians. I honestly don't think that such low numbers prove anything, but it doesn't seem controversial and if I were you I would just move the page. Spaceriqui 20:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- I tried doing that. I have posted the case at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Alexander 007 20:11, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- Another option: transfer the material in Agrianians into Agrianes, then redirect Agrianians to Agrianes, rather than vice versa. Alexander 007 20:16, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- have you tried using the move tab above on this article? Spaceriqui 20:50, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

- Yes. Quote:"I tried doing that." Alexander 007 21:02, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
