Aglianico del Vulture is an Italian red wine with a dry and savoury taste produced in the Vulture area of Basilicata. It was awarded DOC status in 1971 and is considered among the finest wines produced in Italy.[citation needed] Due to similarities in production methods and taste it is sometimes called the Barolo of the South.
Only the Aglianico grape may be used in making this wine. It goes very well with meats, especially roasts, wild game and particularly lamb, and is typically served around 17–18°C.
[edit] Cultivation
Aglianico del Vulture DOC can be produced only in the following communes: Rionero in Vulture, Barile, Rapolla, Ripacandida, Ginestra, Maschito, Forenza, Acerenza, Melfi, Atella, Venosa, Lavello, Palazzo San Gervasio, Banzi, Genzano di Lucania.
[edit] Qualities
Depending on the time of aging in barrique there are two qualities: vecchio after at least three years and riserva after at least five years.
