Agia Varvara (Greek: Άγια Βαρβάρα, meaning Saint Barbara), older form Ayia Varvara is a suburb in the western part of Athens, Greece. The mountaintop of the southern part of Aigaleo lies to the west along with a street linking Nikaia and Chaidari. It is also located SE of Eleusis, S of GR-8A and Athinon Avenue, SW of Thivon Avenue, W of Kifissou Avenue (GR-1/E75, and Athens, NW of Poseidonos Avenue and about 7 km NE of Piraeus. The city has main streets including Gregori Lambraki Street and Petrou Ralli Street that is divided into two way roads which is also linked.
The area was mainly made up of farmlands. Mixed farming was common. Urban development replaced much of the farmlands between the 1940s and the 1970s. Today, most of the municipality are urbanized or residential. The rocky landscape of Aigaleo with a few bushes and pine forests lies to the northwest. The mountaintop is to the west. The industrial area lies to the east where the company named Viochrom SA is located.
The area are made up of hills with exception of the west and the northwest where the Aegaleo ranges are located.
The station of Attiko Metro named Agia Varvara will open in the future. Presently since 2004, the nearest subway station is located in Aegaleo (but it still under construction and it is going to be open in late 2006 or early 2007).
