AFYM

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AFYM, (the Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians) is an annual musical festival in Swansea for young musicians (5-18 years). It consists of 6 days (at the end of January or start of February) of classes and competitions of varying age groups, with a finishing gala concert in the Taliesin theatre in March.

[edit] History

The Festival is the brainchild of two musicians and teachers who, frustrated by the lack of festivals in the Swansea locality, decided to start their own. And a month or two later the first AFYM was held. In that first year, 1993, the festival attracted 70 competitors, using one hall - the Taliesin Arts Centre at Swansea University - and employing one adjudicator. Since 1993, the festival has gone from strength to strength. From only one adjudicator and seventy competitors in 1993, the festival attracted 500 competitors, 6 adjudicators and over 67 classes covering three halls (Guild Hall Swansea since 2000).
