Description

This picture was staged but it symbolises the fact that firestops are dealt with as afterthoughts in many countries. In this example, we have gone to the trouble of getting a cast concrete wall, a fire door, all duly rated, but the cable tray penetration above has no firestop, or it could be an inoperable firestop. No building code or fire code in recorded history ever permitted Swiss cheese fire barriers. Why? Because all fire barriers have testing back-up and if you have holes in there, they fail the fire test. Still, many buildings have no firestops or illegal ones with no certification listings that match the installed configuration. Why? False economies. Why? Culture.
