Category talk:Afro-Puerto Ricans

This list is way off

Afro-Puerto Ricans are persons descended from blacks from Puerto Rico, not American mixes of Puerto Rican and African-American.

This is an unfortunate indiscriminate list of people who happen to be a mix of Puerto Rican ancestry (of any race) and African-American. This has turned into another one of Wikipedia's absurd multiracial lists, like the equally absurd "multiracial persons" list that was deleted last year, which included such gems as Cuban & American, Arab & Persian, and other nonsense. This page should be a list/highlight of Puerto Ricans persons who are black; the black part coming from Puerto Rico's blacks, not American blacks. Puerto Rico has its own rich and vibrant black history unrelated to African-Americans. Why are persons of African-American descent included here?

All people from Puerto Rico are Americans. Black Puerto Ricans from the island of Puerto Rico are African-Americans as well as Latino Americans. MrBlondNYC (talk) 07:19, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for stating the obvious re: citizesnship. However, it is obvious from the context that we are not talking about citizenship but rather culture. Blacks were brought to Puerto Rico from Africa, not the United States. Puerto Rico has its own black history, and in academia the members of this group are called Afro-Puerto Ricans, not African-Americans. African-Americans refers to a specific group of people from the mainland United States. Again, it is this absurdity that leads to the non-academic hogwash which takes away from Wikipedia's credibility. It also produces these long "racial" lists and other lists of trivial and subjective information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.209.50.110 (talk) 18:38, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Then you have every right to nominate this category for deletion. Other users will weigh in with their opinions and an admin will decide. MrBlondNYC (talk) 20:04, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
The idea is not to delete the page, but limit it to what should relevantly be in here, i.e. Afro-Puerto Ricans and Afro-Puerto Rican culture, like Tite Curet Alonso, Rafael Cepeda and Sylvia del Villard, NOT Chino Xl, N.O.R.E. or Big Noyd. The later three, as well as half of the persons on the list, are of African-American descent and from the states. Again, the context is Puerto Rico, and the list should not include American movie-stars or hip-hop artists who are children of a African-American parent and non-black Puerto Ricans, because that is not what Afro-Puerto Rican means. Is there anyone else out there that has a modicum of knowledge on anthropology? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.209.50.110 (talk) 20:54, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
