African American Environmentalist Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The African American Environmentalist Association( AAEA ) is a private, public interest group focusing on environmental issues. Its stated aims include protecting the environment, enhancing human, animal and plant ecologies, promoting the efficient use of natural resources and increasing African American participation in the environmental movement.

AAEA describes itself as "aggressively non-partisan". It has supported Republican policy positions, and particularly those of President George W. Bush on such issues as stem cell research, nuclear power and the handling of Hurricane Katrina, but has also expressed support for Democrats including Joseph Lieberman.

AAEA criticised the Environmental Justice Renewal Act proposed by Hillary Clinton, describing it as "a Band-Aid, nothing more" [1] and has also opposed proposals for a prison in the Bronx [2].

AAEA is listed as a member of the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance and the New Jersey Affordable, Clean, Reliable Energy Coalition. Its founder is listed as a member of the Alliance for Sound Nuclear Policy and the Nuclear Fuels Reprocessing Coalition. Several of these groups have been criticised as Astroturf organizations established by the nuclear power industry. [3]
