[edit] Percentage

I would like this clarified. As I understand it, the AFL percentage formula is For/Agst*100. For a team that has not played a game, this is not possible unless you use algebra. Where for and against are both 0 we can call them x. Therefor x/x*100 is the same as 1*100 or 100.00. In this case wouldn't it be more accurate to list their percentage as 100.00 rather than 0, which makes no sense mathematically. Also the AFL have created this formula with 100.00 as the central mark for teams. In this case it's only fair to have non-playing teams at this mark. Is it fair for a team who has lost by 100 points in their first game to be listed above a team who is yet to play? Lympathy Talk 05:40, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

In mathematics the value of 0/0 is undefined, it is not arbitrarily given the value 1. Thus the percentage for a team that has not played cannot be determined from mathematics, you must simply declare it to be some value. Personally I would agree with you an simply call it 100.0, but it only matters while the first round is in progress, and after that the question is irrelevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.76.190.248 (talk • contribs) 2008/04/18 19:30 (UTC)
