The AFL Tribunal is the disciplinary tribunal of the Australian Football League (an Australian rules football competition).

[edit] Points system

In 2005, the AFL overhauled its disciplinary system by introducing a Match Review Panel that reviews and grades all reportable incidents each week. Offences are ranked against a set of criteria, then assigned a point value. This is then adjusted up or down according to the players previous record, and reduced a further 25% should a player plead guilty. Every 100 points will see the player in question suspended for one match. Players are able to contest either the grading of the offence against the criteria or they can plead not guilty to the entire offence. The tribunal adjudicates on these cases.

[edit] History

In recent years the heaviest suspension has been a seven week suspension to St Kilda's Steven Baker, for an off the ball incident involving Fremantle's Jeff Farmer (who himself was suspended for six weeks for eye-gouging earlier in the season) late in the 2007 season.

In 2008 Barry Hall of the Sydney Swans was suspended for seven matches after striking West Coast's Brent Staker.
