AFL South Africa

AFL South Africa is the governing body and development organisation for Australian rules football in South Africa. The body is funded by North West Academy of Sport, Ausaid and Tattersalls and is primarily concerned with participation in Australian Football amongst indigenous South Africans. The organisation has seen massive growth in participation through development programs similar to Auskick.

In 2004, there were 160 senior and 540 junior players, however this number has been reported to have grown to over 3,000 by 2006. [1]

Brian Dixon is the current president.

The Buffaloes are South Africa's national team, and have participated in the 2002 and 2005 Australian Football International Cup tournaments, finishing 11th and 8th place respectively.

Over the short time frame which AFL South Africa has been in existence, it has seen multiple visits from Australian AFL groups to promote the code. These have included visits from AFL Clubs, the Australian Indigenous Under-17 team, and The Geelong College 1st XVIII football team.
