AFL Premiership 2005 is the 2005 edition of the Australian rules football game for the PlayStation 2. You play as a player in the Australian Football League. This is the next edition after many other editions such as AFL 99 (EA Sports), AFL 2003, AFL 2004 and AFL Premiership Edition (IR Gurus). When Acclaim shut down its operations in Australia, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEE) got publishing and distributing rights to the game. Due to the fact that SCEE had an exclusive period with the title, initially it was only launched on PlayStation 2. However, THQ has released a PC and Xbox version of the game. It is only available in Australia.

[edit] Publicity of the Game
Games based on the sport have not been as presentable as first thought, but has still managed to sell well. For example, AFL Live 2004 (Premiership 2005's predecessor) was the #1 selling game in Australia for some time but lacked the graphical detail and presentation that other sporting games like FIFA 2004, NBA Live 2004 or Madden NFL 2004 offered.
The game was heavily advertised throughout September 2005 on the Nine Network and Network Ten in Australia. The game also received regular plugging from Australian Rules-based shows like "The Footy Show" and "Before the Game". As a result, the game sold very well.
Some gaming critics criticize the release time of the game[citation needed]. The game was released in September 2005, as the premiership season was coming to a close. Though the game did sell very well following the AFL Grand final, some felt it would have benefited more if the release was delayed until the start of the 2006 season, around March 2006.
