Aewm, a minimalist window manager.

aewm is a minimal X window manager written in C for Unix and Linux systems. One of its goals is to be a good, basic implementation of the ICCCM and EWMH specifications. The standard distribution includes a taskbar which, together with the window manager, comprises an extremely bare bones implementation of a Windows 95-esque desktop environment.

According to the aewm home page, aewm is written all-lowercase, but stands for "An Exiguous Window Manager".

Because of its learnable EMWH and ICCCM code, aewm has also served as the starting point for a large number of popular window managers for X. A list would include:

  • Sapphire
  • alloywm
  • evilwm
  • maewm
  • Oroborus
  • phluid
  • swm
  • Clementine
  • WindowLab
  • YeahWM
  • Spook
  • wimpwm
