[edit] Summary
A retelling of the Alabasta arc with new music and some new animation done in widescreen format. While essentially the same story as the anime and manga compressed into shorter time period, the movie makes changes on some things.
[edit] Synopsis
The film begins with a flashback of Vivi riding on Pell, and asking Pell why he trains and fights. Pell replies that he fights to protect the country, prompting Vivi to wish to become stronger as well. The flashback then ends with Vivi's point of view on the current situation, involving the rebel army and Crocodile's true intentions, and finally showing Vivi to have been sleeping on a lawn chair onboard the Going Merry, which is heading toward Alabasta. The film then picks up at the point where Usopp and Luffy fish Mr.2 Bon Clay out of the water, and, with neither side knowing who the other side is, Mr.2 gives a small presentation by copying each of the Straw Hats' faces (bar Sanji, who refuses to allow Bon Clay to touch him).
After Bon Clay leaves, Vivi realizes who he really was, having realized that one of the faces during Bon Clay's presentation was that of her father, King Cobra's. She then explains in-depth why Alabasta is in turmoil and about the Dance Powder, as well as Crocodile, before the Straw Hats even reach Alabasta. The film then cuts to Alabasta, where Crocodile has put on yet another display of his faux heroism to the citizens of Alabasta by draining the water from the body of a pirate, killing him thusly. Crocodile then visits Cobra's palace and throws the dehydrated corpse of the pirate captain that he killed at Cobra's feet, followed by a brief discussion between the two men on the upcoming revolution.
The scene then cuts back to the Straw Hats' ship, where all the members are tying white bandages onto their arms to counter Mr.2's Mane Mane ability. At this point, the opening credits stop rolling, and the film cuts to the Straw Hats' trek through the desert, completely skipping the stop in Nanohana, the encounter with Ace, and the filler material, as well as how they met Eyelashes the camel.
Night soon falls, and the party arrives at the decrepit Yuba, now destroyed by Crocodile's sandstorms. During Vivi's talk with Toto, the film arrives at Nanohana, where Kohza and his band of rebels discover the city to be completely wrecked. The rebels begin to rescue what they believe to be the "victims" of the Royal Soldiers, not knowing that they were really Baroque Works agents. It is at this point where Kohza decides to gather all of the rebels for a massive attack on Alubarna.
Meanwhile, just outside Alubarna, Sir Crocodile, along with Miss. All-Sunday(Nico Robin) discuss Operation: Utopia with the remaining officer agents, while Toto gives Vivi a few paring words of advice and gives Luffy what little water he managed to dig up. The next morning, Luffy and Vivi get into a conflict, with Luffy teaching Vivi that in a war, lives must be lost, and stopping Crocodile is the only way that the country will survive. Inside the palace, Bon Clay, disguised as Cobra, orders Chaka and Pell to gather all of the soldiers to crush the rebellion, knowing mass panic would spread.
By now, the Straw Hats are completing the last leg of their journey on the gigantic crab Matsuge. However, Crocodile manages to catch up to them in the form of a sandstorm, taking Vivi along with him. Luffy grabs Vivi and throws her back onto the crab, telling the rest of the Straw Hats to go on. The first round of the Luffy vs. Crocodile fight then begins, ending with Crocodile stabbing Luffy through the stomach and tossing him into a pit of quicksand.
The rest of the Straw Hats continue on, donning identical mantles to confuse the BW officer agents guarding the entrances to Alubarna. Taking the bait, each pair of officer agents follow a certain pair of Straw Hats, leaving Vivi to stop the oncoming rebellion by herself. However, her attempt is stopped by BW agents who had infiltrated the royal army. Meanwhile, each Straw Hat participate in a battle with the remaining officer agents, all of which they win, as Vivi enter Alubarna herself on Carue.

[edit] Changes
Beyond the necessary shortening of scenes, cutting out filler from the anime, the movie changes other elements. Some of the more notable aspects is the complete removal of the Navy's involvement and by association, Smoker and Tashigi are absent. Some others were quite minor like changing the scene where Mr. 2 meets Sanji on the Going Merry. In that scene, he doesn't, but not touching his cheek as he did in the anime. Finally some elements were added, such as Luffy's new entrance into Alubarna before fighting Crocodile in the mortuary temple.
[edit] Reception
One Piece The Movie: The Desert Princess and The Pirates' Adventures in Alabasta has received generally mixed critical reception. The Anime News Network gave the dub a C+ and the original Japanese version a B- stating that it is, "A buffet of highlights from one of the television series' best story arcs served with theatrical polish and no 'One Piece Rap'", while also stating, "(It's) strictly for fans (and it) leaves out too much essential information and build-up to make for good viewing independent of the original".
DVD Talk gave the film a recommendation and stated that it relied on humor and action to push it forward rather than story or characters, and it had good animation and sound. They also, however, stated that the film's pieced-together nature leaves a lot to be desired.
IGN gave the movie a 7 out of 10
