AdventureQuest Worlds (also referred to by its website name AQWorlds or simply AQW) is an upcoming MMORPG developed by Artix Entertainment in 2008. It is currently under public Alpha testing available to those who have Guardian accounts on AdventureQuest, Star Captains in MechQuest, and those with Dragon Amulets in Dragonfable. The final release date is unknown.

The game uses a more simplified graphic style than its predecessors to reduce lag time[1] Also unlike Artix Entertainment's previous games, it features real-time battles instead of turn-based ones. Players who participate in testing will be given special items to show they played the initial testing stages.[1]

[edit] Testing

Alpha testing began June 2, 2008 for all players with an upgraded account for one of Artix Entertainment's previous three games: AdventureQuest, DragonFable, and MechQuest.[1] This testing was not a full release of the game; rather, its purpose was to test how many players could be on the game servers at the same time. As was to be expected with the first release of a new game, several problems appeared, including a server error that caused extreme amounts of lag time and a mistake in the code that changed every character's name to Captain Rhubarb. This led to the erasing of all accounts and the promise to reopen the game for character creation and more testing on June 4.

The second round of testing opened around 12:45 P.M. UTC-5. Lag was significantly reduced on all areas and many bugs from the first test were cleaned up. After 5 hours of operation, the second alpha test officially ended and the homepage login link was closed down. However, for at least a half hour afterwards, many players were still in the server and were still able to use a URL to get around the barrier. Eventually, the server was completely shut down and the testing day truly ended. The next day, the staff posted that a new version of the game was being constructed and that the next testing day would be on Monday the following week.

The first stages of testing allow players only to travel, buy items, change class and hairstyle/skin color, and battle monsters. Dropped items are not able to be sold, disappear upon logging out, and are only for testing purposes. There are also no noticeable differences between character classes besides appearance, as all classes haved the same four skills to test, including a melee attack, an ice attack spell, and a healing spell. Potion icons appear, but are not yet usable. Class differences will be implemented in later tests and the full release. Because live chat is used ingame, Artix Entertainment requires all players to be over 13 years old.
