Dr. Adrienne Warshawski is a fictional historical figure in the Honorverse.
In 3376 AD, she invented the Grav Scanner, a device that allowed for grav waves to be detected in hyperspace, thus allowing for the impeller drive to be used in hyperspace. This alone earned her enough renown that spacers refer to these detectors as "warshawskis".
In the process of inventing the grav scanner, Warshawski learned a great deal about the nature of grav waves. This knowledge allowed her to invent the Warshawski sail, which allows starships to ride grav waves in hyperspace. With the Warshawski sail, hyperspace travel became an even faster mode of transportation.
