Adrienne Bolland

Adrienne Bolland (1896 – March 18, 1975) was a French test pilot and the first woman to fly over the Andes.

Bolland was the first or second woman to cross the English Channel on August 25, 1920.

In 1921, Bolland worked as a test pilot for Caudron. The flight over the Andes was a publicity stunt to promote the new G3 model of the French aircraft manufacturer. Bolland started on April 1, 1921 in Mendoza, Argentina and kept a flight level of 14,750 feet (4500 m), which meant she had to fly around some of the mountains. After a 10 hours flight, she landed in Santiago de Chile. Many people had gathered to celebrate the feat — notably missing was the French consul who believed it was an April Fool's Day joke.
