Talk:Adolph Freiherr Knigge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We hat the same discussion in the german wikipedia: Google suggests "von", but in fact, the Freiherr never lead the "von" in his name. I asked one of his descendants, and he claimed that "Freiherr Knigge" ist the correct name. Normaly in german names the "von" indicates nobitily. In fact most of the noble families in Germany lead the "von" in their name, but some of them did not, e.g. the family "Lambsdoff" (see Otto Graf Lambsdorff, former german foreign minister). The "von" seems to be be some kind of "hyper correction" that appeared in the 19. century. Flups 09:49, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
[edit] translation of "Über den Umgang mit Menschen"
As a translation of "Ueber den Umgang mit Menschen" I prefer "On Human Conduct" to either of the previous attempts, "On Conversation with Men" and "Behaviour towards Men". Neither of those translations are idiomatic English (nor even do they make much sense in English).
Another possibility would be "On Human Behavior".
- (replying to self--) On further consideration, "On Human Relations" seems better than any of the above.
I don't know if there is a already a standard or well-known translation of this title (a quick google search didn't turn one up).
- Random House uses "On Human Conduct" while an early American translation by Peter Will (Lansingburgh [N.Y.] : Penniman & Bliss, 1805, Troy [N.Y.] : O. Penniman) goes with "Practical philosophy of social life, or, The art of conversing with men". Campus-Verlag and another source or two suggest "About Dealing With People". My own preference is still, "On Human Relations".

In the works list, it would be nice to have the titles listed in the original language as well as in English translation (I don't have the patience to look all of them up myself).
Also, whether "Űber" or "Ueber" would be the preferred form here, I would leave to those more expert . . . "Ueber" will display more reliably with different browsers and operating systems.

[edit] translation of titles of works
I translated the titles of the works rather quickly and without any deep knowledge of the works involved. Therefore--foolish mistakes are quite possible! Feel free to edit away if you have knowledge of 18th Century German or of these particular works.

[edit] not "von"
There's no "von" in Knigge's name, please move to Adolf Freiherr Knigge. 84.61.7.226 13:07, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
