I hope to become an admin someday... I have been on Wikipedia a while but have only gotten more serious the past couple weeks... ~ clearthought 13:32, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

- My best advice is to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia. Get to know the Help:Contents pages like the back of your hand. Then move on to the Wikipedia:Community portal and Wikipedia:Department directory. While reading, if you come across any links that are blatantly missing from Help, the Directory, or the Community Portal, by all means add them in! But don't forget article space! It's easy to caught up in the Wikipedia community and practically forget that Wikipedia is first and formost an encycopedia. An encyclopedia which has a long way to go before being even close to completion. Dig in and learn to your heart's content. The best administrators are also among the best editors on Wikipedia. - A great place to start is Wikipedia's Help desk. You'll learn a lot because just about every kind of weird problem comes across that desk. You'll get to see how others answer the questions, and pretty soon, you'll be able to answer most of them too. Also check my answers to the other posts here, to see if any of those areas interest you. The Transhumanist 10:33, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I'd appreciate admin coaching. At the moment, I can think of three areas I'd like guidance on: (a) in my recent unsuccessful RfA, one of the pieces of advice that stood out to me was that I need to learn to "be as Zen as possible, and seek out the center of indifference." I think I've gotten calmer and not quite so hairtrigger, but I still have a ways to go before becoming a Zen admin. (b) I have an idea for an effort to get a particular article I'd love to get going up the chain to good/featured article status (I'd like to satisfy the WP:1FA-ers), but need advice on how to gather interested editors and coordinate efforts; (c) I'd appreciate guidance or coaching to figure out various WikiProjects — preferably articlespace but also Wikipedia-namespace — where I can lend my shoulder to the grindstone in a more concentrated subject area or manner. Wikignoming is nice but a Wikipedia "home" would be useful/enjoyable, too. — Mike (talk • contribs) 21:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- (a) Become one with the wiki. As time goes on, you will learn more and more about Wikipedia and its operations, so that things which seemed so important while you were embroiled in a confrontation will appear trivial when you look back upon them just 3 or 4 months later. Wikipedia is almost indestructable. You can afford to let things go, back off, chill and watch what happens. It's not going to fall apart while you are gone. And keep in mind that there are probably a dozen other ways to achieve any specific editing goal you might have here. There are many paths to enlightenment in the wiki. (b) consider placing notices in all the right places, such as on the discussion page of the relevant WikiProject, on the Community bulletin board, and of course on the talk page of the article in question. Before going through Wikipedia:Peer review, you may want to try Wikipedia:Requests for feedback first. Be sure to focus on the article's references, as that is one of the hardest chores in polishing an article to featured status. See Wikipedia:References for more information. (c) A couple projects in the Wikipedia namespace that could really use some more volunteers are Wikipedia:Contents (if you like subject matter) and Wikipedia:Tip of the day (if you want to dig into the how-to of Wikipedia). For both of those projects, the talk page is where the action is. In the main namespace, the Lists of basic topics, which provides "cheat sheets" on a variety of subjects is far from complete, and provides an opportunity to share your knowledge in a variety of subject areas. Pick a favorite subject and jump in - or see the detailed task list on the talk page. I hope you find something that interests you amongst these suggestions. I tried for RfA not too long ago here, and as you can see, failed. I closed it two hours after I opened it, fin'd at (0/9/1).. So yeh.. I want to try again before the years out, and hopefully succeed this time. Thanks--Deon555|talk 01:02, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
- Why the rush? Focus on the health of the wiki, and everything else will take care of itself. One approach to becoming an admin is not to worry about it. Just be the best editor you can be, get involved with projects wherever your heart takes you, and eventually someone may nominate you. Being in a hurry is a fast path to frustration. See Wikipedia:Eventualism. The Transhumanist 11:16, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I want to know what i can do to become a better WikipedianFabio 02:24, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- To become a better Wikipedian, make Wikipedia better. Wikipedia is both an encyclopedia and a community. Anything you can do to improve either or both of those is a reflection upon you and all other Wikipedians. Not only will you enrich yourself, but you will enrich other Wikipedians in the process -- and everyone who accesses Wikipedia from all around the world is a Wikipedian. Every person on the planet is a potential Wikipedian, so keep them all in mind, and you'll do fine. The Transhumanist 11:16, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I AM READY TO BE ALL I CAN BE SIR!! I have a lot of time and love Wikipedia. I am going for adminship at the horizon, and want to do as much as posisble.
- THEN DROP AND GIVE ME 50! What Wikipedia needs most is content and content polishing. It is after all, an encyclopedia. Become familiar with every page listed on the Wikipedia:Comunity Portal and get involved in whichever page you think needs the most help, and before too long, someone will tap you on the shoulder (nominate you) to become an admin. - An eventualist. Cool. While you are waiting, a link dump needs sorting through on List of glossaries, in case you want to help out with the Wikipedia:Contents project, the goal of which is to get the main access pages of Wikipedia ready for inclusion on the sidebar, so that they are easily accessible from everywhere on Wikipedia. Either the page links themselves may be provided on the sidebar, or the Contents page. Either way, this is unlikely to happen until these pages are up to snuff. The Transhumanist 11:34, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Good of you for taking this over. Thanks for the offer of work but I have enough on my plate for the medium term. If you have a look round I've done the same as yourself and with one other editor have taken over the user page warnings project, see here and here. Well anyway sorry I can't take this on as well (for now) but as I said before I'll still be here. Looking at your comment on the bottom, a bit about me, I have about 3,500 edits mainly through vandal fighting, and a couple of articles, dabble a little bit in afd's but the main area is the user page warnings. Main reason for the coaching is to gain a greater understanding of wiki procedures, outside of my current sphere. Cheers Khukri (talk . contribs) 19:58, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Besides writing and copyediting I enjoy mundane tasks like closing AfDs. Would you be so kind as to have a look at me as potential administrator material? Thanks, in advance. Ifnord 04:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- Your edit profile looks fine to me: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~interiot/cgi-bin/Tool1/wannabe_kate?username=Ifnord&site=en.wikipedia.org I'd say you are ready. You may want to look into some of Wikipedia's other departments, but with 3,000+ edits almost split down the middle between article space and the wikipedia namespace, you're ready for the mop. The best approach is probably to ask the admin you know best (and who knows you best) to nominate you. That admin will be able to write the best nom. Oh, and definitely create a user page for yourself. It seems kind of awkward that an admin candidate doesn't even have a user page set up. The Transhumanist 11:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] (unassigned) Ikiroid
I'd like some more guidance on how to go about using my time and skills more effectively on wikipedia. There are some things that seem to go over my head in this internet community.......IMHO, it's not as much of being the ideal admin as being the ideal wikipedian. I'd like to be confident in my savoir-faire of wikipedia before taking another shot at adminship. You can take a look at my improvement page and my failed RfA for some insight about where I need help. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 03:06, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- To get a feel for what your fellow Wikipedians value in an administrator, read through the RfA archives. Also take note of the objections posted in your RfA, roll up your shirtsleeves and put in some time in the article namespace. Just press "random article" until something interesting pops up, and start editing away. Alternatively, you can start browsing at Wikipedia:Contents and keep clicking on links until you spot something interesting or which needs help. Get your main namespace edits up to about 3,000, to 5,000 and then go for RfA again. The Transhumanist 12:28, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

- You have 121 edits. Most of them are in the main namespace, and that's good. Keep that up. Read all of Help:Contents (a page or two a day, or more if you like). Learn the wiki way. In the meantime, have fun! And to learn the ropes really fast, read all the tips at Wikipedia:Tip of the day. The Transhumanist 12:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I would love to be coached and become more familiar with Wikipedia's policies. Wikipediarules2221 04:27, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- Don't forget the guidelines, those are important too. One way to get familiar with policies is to read the talk pages of those who cite them all the time: namely, administrators. Pick your favorite admin or two, and start reading away. Reading the policies themselves also helps. Good luck, have fun. The Transhumanist 12:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

- You have over 9,000 edits. I think you would make a better coach than a coachee. The best thing you could do is add your name to the list at the top of this page, or just start answering people's questions. Because with that much main namespace experience, you could be a great help to a lot of users. Have you considered volunteering at WP:HD, WP:NCH, or WP:RD? - Admins need experience all around. I noticed you haven't done much with Portals or Categories yet. You might want to put some edits in there. You also seem to like aviation and space flight. You could check each of the pages on the Template:Contents pages (header bar) to see if those two subjects are adequately covered. Once you are done with those, any and all Help:Contents pages need monitoring/proofreading/updating/improving. If you need more to do, or another direction, feel free to ask. thehelp pages? The Transhumanist 13:29, 1 November 2006 (UTC)- I am not quite sure what you mean by "Wikipedia's the help" pages. I am pretty sure you do not mean the Help Desk, however, I am familiar with those. It is a little surprising to get this call just now as I am handing in my thesis today, something which prevented me having any serious thoughts about immediate adminship for the last two months. - Sorry 'bout the typo. Things are kind of crunched together here. By the "help pages" I mean all the help menus (Help:Contents and all its sub-menus) and all the pages listed on those menus. (You might even find some that aren't listed floating around in Wikipedia, and if you do, by all means, add them to a menu page). The Transhumanist 02:03, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

- You've got quite a bit of main namespace experience. You would be a major asset to the Wikipedia:Help desk and Wikipedia:New contributors' help page as a volunteer to pass on your editing experience to others. Volunteering there will give you an opportunity to become more familiar with Wikipedia's reference pages (help pages, directories, etc.), as you will need to look up the answers to any questions you do not know. Once you've got a good grip on those, come back here and help coach! And above all, have fun. The Transhumanist 14:47, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

I would just generally like to learn more about improving my contributions to Wikipedia, such as bringing articles up to FA status, etc.. I'm a little busy right now with theater, music and school, but by the time I get to the top of this list, I'm sure I'll have plenty of time (a few months from now? Hooray for backlogs ;) ) to edit more frequently. -- Cielomobile talk / contribs 05:53, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

So as more questions get posed here, be sure to read them over to see if there are any you can answer. Concerning FA, see my reply to #Meta editor, below. [edit] (unassigned) Cynical
Given the failure of my recent RFA I think admin coaching would be a good way of improving my suitability for adminship if/when I decide to reapply. Cynical 18:34, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'm coming up on 16,000 edits here pretty soon, and I haven't even tried for my RfA yet (though I'm now gearing up for it). There's just so much to do, and so many projects, that fixating on admin status is unnecessary. There are hundreds of projects to work on, and millions of pages. Just keep accumulating experience, and adminship will eventually be a breeze.
- Concerning your RfA, the opposition seemed to be focused on a perception of negativity. You can disagree with others (in AfDs, RfAs, etc.), but you need to show more compassion toward your fellow Wikipedians. Without changing your vote, go beyond the vote to help in some way, with advice, offer to answer questions, etc. The spirit of adminship is helping others, while protecting Wikipedia. It's up to you to find the right balance. The Transhumanist 16:01, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

- No more waiting. This bottleneck is blasted. There are enough people on this page to help each other. So if you have any questions, fire away! Looking at your edit history, you are a bit heavy on the user page editing. You need to shift your ratio to the encyclopedia itself. After you get a couple thousand more edits there, you should be ready to tackle Wikipedia's blue pages. The Transhumanist 16:08, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! Yes, I know about the userpage editing: my main problem is that I start new articles in my userspace and edit large articles (Ahmose I, as a good example) that take a while in my sandbox. I also work on stuff for other users on my subpages, and contribute to things on other users' subpages.
Two days ago (before I got this message) I started doing some constructive encyclopedia-editing, copyediting articles extensively. I think that will be my focus here, as I much prefer fixing others' work than adding original content of my own (not that I don't do that too).May I ask for suggestions regarding how I can learn more about Wikipedia policies, and the nitty-gritty things average editors don't need to know? — Editor at Large(speak) 20:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Sure can. But would you do me a favor at the same time? That would be to post any further questions you may have at the Wikipedia:Admin school's main page. I'll transfer this latest question of yours, and answer it there, now. The Transhumanist 05:11, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Been editing for a few months, early (around about April I should be ready) next year I'd like to go for an RFA, but in the meantime I'd like some coaching to become a better editor, and, hopefully, one day a better admin. I'd like to know a bit more about the finer points of Wikipedia, and a bit more about the admin tasks. My edit count. Thanks- CattleGirl talk | e@ 10:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- Learn by example. Pick your favorite admin or two, and then carefully study their contribution histories. Dip in and read how they deal with users. As for editing, study the edit histories of featured articles and their talk pages. Then you'll know how quality articles are edited. Use the diff button to read the changes, and don't be shy - go in and display each version and look them over carefully. User:Pegship is one of the most knowledgeable editors I've ever run across. Check out her contributions. The Transhumanist 16:22, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- I suggest just keep getting involved in Projects, visiting the Help Desk, the Reference Desk, and vandal fighting. X [Mac Davis] (SUPERDESK|Help me improve) 18:00, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I know pretty much the ins and outs of wikipedia, except the policys. I know the common ones, but the obscure ones I need to learn. Otherwise I pretty much know how to do things appropriately, I just need to get in the habit of doing (such as edit summaries, checking the minor edit check). Maybe if this works out well, I'll try for WP:RFA in a few months. --andrewI20Talk 05:41, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yep, edit summaries are important. You are already on the right track. Read the policies, but don't forget the guidelines. Familiarize yourself with 's departments, and above all, master Wikipedia's help pages. (Hint, hint, the help menus are pretty complete, but the help pages themselves still need lots of work). The Transhumanist 15:12, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- I really didn't do check minor edit everytime I made a minor edit, and maybe 10% of the time left an edit summary. I suggest going into your preferences, and checking "check all edits as minor" and the option that tells you to leave an edit summary if you didn't. That way, you'll uncheck it if it is a big edit, and leave a summary almost everytime! X [Mac Davis] (SUPERDESK|Help me improve) 18:02, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm no longer interested in being coached. I'll learn the natural way,and if in the future, I'm still interested in being a admin, I'll consider it. But I'd rather focus on more important things. Plus, why was "I know my way around" added to my comment. Seems a bit...big headed in a way. I still need to learn a lot. Sorry for wasting your time though. Thank you for the offer nonetheless. --andrew|ellipsed...Speak 05:14, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Started a little while back, creating my own article. I have now found my calling in vandal fighting, but I know there is so much more to learn. Like the others, I want to learn the 'tips and tricks' of wikipedia. Pcbene 01:25, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
- Many of Wikipedia's tips and tricks are presented at Wikipedia:Tips and Wikipedia:Tip of the day. While you are there be sure to jot down your best vandal hunting tips. The Transhumanist 15:05, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Wow, there's a tips page? The best way to learn the tips and tricks is the same way as learning them in any good expensive piece of software—use it a lot, and they'll be apparent. Based on the first page of your contributions, it looks like most of what you do is VFing. That's not much exposure to the spacious skies, amber waves of grain, or purple mountain majesties of Wikipedia! Cruise around, do a lot of article editing, visit user pages, the Help Desk, the Reference Desk, Portals, or Projects. Visit the community portal. I started editing properly a few months ago, but I have mostly focused on the background areas of Wikipedia, like maintaining WikiProjects, the community portal etc. and have not really contributed loads to articles and would like some advice concerning articles and getting them to ga and fa status. Thanks. Lcarsdata (Talk) 09:30, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
- This user should not be regarded as coached for anything whatsoever but since all he seemed to want was advice on article-writing I left him one or two pointers - which is something I am qualified to do. Moreschi 18:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Ling.Nut 19:00, 29 October 2006 (UTC) I've only been a Wikipedian for a couple months, but have 5K+ edits. I'm putting my name here because the waiting list is apparently long; by the time my name is called I should have logged considerably more flight time. Am especially interested in clearing out backlogs throughout Wikipedia. --Ling.Nut 19:00, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm not looking forward to be an Admin, till the time comes. I still feel, I lack knowledge on lot many things in Wikipedia. I'm willing to learn, if only someone is there to help. Call me when my number comes. If it is long, who knows, I may even hop on to the other side of the table, if I feel better of my capabilities. Cheers. -- Chez (Discuss / Email) • 07:45, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I've been on Wikipedia quite awhile now (a year or two, tops), but I'm still rather ignorant of many technical aspects. In particular, I've no idea what it takes to make it to Featured article status, or how to cite references using wiki-tech (that is, anything but putting a link into the main body of the article). Eventually, I'd like to run for adminship, but I'm currently so far removed from wikipolitics that I'd have no idea what is expected of me. I focus mostly on writing articles, but I'd like to learn how to deal effectively with other aspects of Wikipedia. Canæn 07:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I withdrew from my recent RfA after some users brought up the fact that I didn't have sufficient experience with admin-style duties. I hope to put in another RfA as soon as I'm ready, but I need some help and coaching first. I also intend to go for an editor review - is that advisable? (I should have done it before my first RfA, but didn't bother. Walton monarchist89 12:12, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've looked over your contributions, and my advice is to stop worrying about adminship. You've locked-on to "passing RfA" as a goal, and that's the wrong approach. Wikipedia needs admins who are experienced and trustworthy editors. Gaining the trust of the community takes time: time for other Wikipedians to become familar with you. Experience also takes time: time for you to become familiar with Wikipedia. Of all the things you still have left to learn about Wikipedia's operations, I'd estimate that the admin tools make up about 1 per cent of those. There are lots of cool activities to explore. Wikipedia abounds with many types of content to work on (articles, lists, images, portals, categories, and templates); projects, programs, and departments to participate in, and tools to learn how to use and then make use of. These are every bit as interesting (or more so) than the few extra buttons you get when you are an admin. Editor review would be fine, because feedback is good, but Peer review would be even better. And if what you want to do is get experience with Wikipedia as fast as you can, then here are the places to learn it:
- Editing the actual content of the encyclopedia itself. That's the reason we are all here: to build an encyclopedia for the benefit of the world. Never lose sight of that. And there's a pretty cool side-benefit to editing the encyclopedia: education. Knowledge of the world.
- Wikipedia's help pages (all of them - there's no rush, just start with the ones you find most interesting, and keep going back for more).
- Wikipedia's Community Portal (pick a link, and get involved. And of course, keep going back for more).
- Wikipedia's department directory (explore the Wikipedia community)
- The tips at the tip of the day department (tricks and techniques)
- Wikipedia's help desk (sharing experience is what happens there 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The archives make an excellent read too - there's years of experience recorded in there.)
- Wikipedia's reference desks (sharing knowledge is what happens there 24 hours per day, seven days per week. You'll be surprised what you'll learn there about the world, about the encyclopedia, and how people use it.)
- The village pump (The central discussion areas of Wikipedia)
- Wikipedia's policy and guideline pages
- Administrators' reading list
- Administrators' how-to guide
- Admins do what other Wikipedians do, plus some janitorial chores. Learn Wikipedia first, and the mop will come soon enough. The Transhumanist 09:28, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

- OK, thanks. I think you're probably right that, while I have a lot of experience writing/editing articles and reviewing content, I have very little experience of the technical and community-based side of things, e.g. village pump, help desks, community portal. Over the next couple of weeks I will try to get more involved in this side of things, particularly the village pump. Thanks also for posting the 'virtual classroom' guides; I will take a look at those and they should be helpful. Walton monarchist89 10:31, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. A month or two back I went through the RFA process a bit hastily and understandably failed. In the mean time, I've been trying to follow through with the suggestions ЯEDVERS and (aeropagitica) gave me. I put myself up for editor review a few weeks ago to check to see if I was on track. I was wondering if I should participate in the admin coaching program or just continue with what I'm doing now. Suggestions? --Brad Beattie (talk) 12:49, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- Just to follow up, I have roughly 3500 edits at the moment, the majority of which were contributed within the last two months. I gather I'm still to green in heavy activity to successfully pass an RFA, but a month of coaching would certainly be of great assistance. I would very much like to do whatever I can to help out our dear Wiki. --Brad Beattie (talk) 02:59, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- A second follow-up. User:Fang Aili has taken me under her wing as her coachee. No need to find me a coach. Cheers! --Brad Beattie (talk) 16:00, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

This is just what I've been looking for! I'd love to become an administrator, primarily to become an integral part of the fight against vandalism. On Wikipedia, I believe that it is inevitable that users either become editors or they become vandal crushers. I want to become the latter, and although I am on the track to eliminating vandalism I need help if I want to become the ultimate vandal-crusher! Although I know wikipedia policy very well, I feel I need tuned on the finer points of adminship and I hope this program can assist me. Cheers. Anthonycfc (talk • email) 15:04, Wednesday June 11, 2008 (UTC)
- Anthony, you dont need to be an administrator to be a vandal fighter. In fact, many of our most prolific vandal fighters are not administrators. If, however, you decide to try and RfA at some point, I strongly advise you to change your signature. People oppose you for having a sig that takes up six lines. I've been going around Wikipedia for over a year, and I would also like to become an administrator eventually. I have mostly been working on anti-vandalism work, as well as helping out with various WikiProjects. While I still think anti-vandalism is an important effort, I'm beginning to help write more articles and cleanup the backlog, and I'd appreciate if any admins could guide me on the road towards an RfA. Thanks! –- kungming·2 (Talk) 22:22, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I have been with Wikipedia for quite some time now (nearing one year), but I'm still unsure about how Wikipedia works. I have not corrected any vandalism or reverted any pages (didn't come across them yet), and I don't know what I should do if I were to see them. That, and some other things. I have only about 268 edits, but I'm currently working on a few pages now. I am hoping to get my turn soon, but I can wait. Well, bye for now! Incidentally, what's citing? (Hope I am specific enough) Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC) 13:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Zachary, if you wish to help with vandal patrol, a good place to start is Special:Recentchanges. You can find advice on how to do recent change patrol here. Once you have more edits you will be able to apply for special anti-vandal tools which makes removing and reporting vandalism much easier. You will need to have several thousand edits to get through an RfA, so take your time and write good articles, explore the various areas of Wikipedia, get to know other editors and have fun! Citing Wikipedia is a page which explains how to cite Wikipedia as a source or reference in non-Wikipedia articles. Sarah Ewart 18:47, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, thanks...I'll keep that in mind!! Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC) 13:32, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- Generally, nominees are expected (by those who participate in the RfA process) to have around 2,000 edits, but this "requirement" varies from participant to participant. Just keep plugging away, and eventually you'll be ready. The Transhumanist 01:27, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I've been editing for 6 months now, have about 100 new articles started (list is here), 6100+ total edits, 3800+ in the name space and 2200+ unique articles edited, and I'm active in a couple of projects and new page patrolling, so it's about time I started thinking about taking up the mop and bucket and helping in other ways as well. A couple of months ago, I signed up for an editor review which resulted in some helpful suggestions. As I see it, the next step in the process would be coaching, so when a coach becomes available, I'm interested. Thanks! Akradecki 00:21, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
