[edit] History
Adlai E. Stevenson High School was built in 1965 to accommodate the rising population in Livonia due to the sudden mass migration of people from the nearby city of Detroit during the 1960s. It was dedicated on October 24, 1965, United Nations Day and the 20th anniversary of that body's founding, by Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Stevenson was the first high school in the nation named for the Sixth U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai E. Stevenson, who had died one day prior to the Livonia school board's decision on naming the new high school.

Stevenson is recognized by the North Central Association and is the only high school in Livonia to have a Global Education program, which mixes English and Social Studies courses and exposes students to World cultures.

[edit] Athletic Facilities
Stevenson's soccer, football, cheer, pom and track and field teams use Anders Field located directly behind Stevenson. It is named in memory of Lester C. Anders, Stevenson's first Athletic Director who died of lung cancer shortly after the school's opening. The basketball team uses the Jay W. Formsma Memorial Gymnasium, named after Stevenson's first principal. It is also where Physical Education classes are held.
Both the Boys and Girls Tennis Teams play on the 10 tennis courts directly behind Stevenson, east of Anders Field. In addition to the outdoor facilities, Stevenson also has a fieldhouse containing 18 basketball hoops (3 full-sized courts, 6 half-sized courts), 6 volleyball courts, 2 batting cages, a 5-laned track (Approx. 9 laps = 1 Mile), a weight room, and a fitness center. Stevenson's baseball and softball diamonds are located behind the school west of Anders Field. Both Stevenson's Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving Teams use the swimming pool.
[edit] Spirit Week Controversy
On Thursday May 15, 2008 over 50 students were suspended for t-shirts they wore that day. The T-shirts said "puschin' it to the limit" on the front, and "Class of .08 Seniors" on back. The administration took this as an underage drinking reference and cracked down on those wearing the shirts. This was a part of spirit week at the high school; as tradition the seniors made humorous t-shirts. The story swept across local news and radio stations WXYZ, WDIV, 95.5 radio, and briefly touched national news coverage on Fox News's morning program "Fox and Friends". The administration of the school threatened to ban the suspended students from senior prom and commencement ceremonies, but they ended up assigning required essays to the students wearing these shirts instead.[1]
