Adina Vălean

Adina Ioana Vălean (b. February 16, 1968) is a Romanian politician and social activist. A member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies on the Justice and Truth list for Călăraşi County (during the 2004 elections), and became a Member of the European Parliament on January 1, 2007, with the accession of Romania to the European Union.

Vălean was born in Ţintea commune, which is currently a part of Băicoi. She graduated from the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Mathematics in 1990, working as a schoolteacher of mathematics in Bucharest until 1997. She joined the Romanian Democratic Convention cabinet as a Head of Department in the Ministry of Youth and Sports (charged with overseeing contacts with non-governmental organizations and county-level Directorates), as well as representative in youth initiatives of the European Union. She was later employed by think tanks (the Romanian Association for Freedom and Development and the Free Initiative Institute). In 2001, she initiated the program Promovarea toleranţei prin dialog interetnic ("Promoting Tolerance through Inter-ethnic Dialog").

A member of the PNL since 1999, Vălean was a member of its Bucharest Sector 1 Permanent Bureau (2002-2004), and later served on its Commission for Business Environment, Privatization, and Competitive Policies (until 2004).

As a deputy, she served on the Committee for Labor and Social Protection, as well as on the Committee for Information Technology and Communications.
