Ardeshir "Adi" Ratan Bulsara (May 15, 1951[1][2]) is a scientist in the area nonlinear dynamics. He studied under the Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine.[3][4] The 2007 International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (ICAND), held in Kauai, Hawaii, was a festschrift held in his honor of his 55th birthday.[5]

[edit] Personal life

He was born in Bombay, India, attended the Campion School [6] there, run by Jesuits, and presently resides in San Diego, USA.[7] He is married to Marcia and has two children.[8] On his paternal side, he is a cousin of Freddie Mercury and on his maternal side he is a third cousin of Zubin Mehta.[9] In his younger days he was keen cyclist and competed in various cycling events.[10]

[edit] Education and Career

He obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Texas at Austin, under the Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine, in 1978.[11][12] His thesis was entitled, Entropy, Stability and Fluctuations in Lasing Systems.[13][14] He is a Senior Researcher with the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego, California, USA where he leads the Applied Chaos and Dynamics Group that specializes in applications of nonlinear dynamics.[15] He is the author of more than 100 articles in the physics literature. His primary research area is in the physics of noisy nonlinear dynamic systems.[16]

[edit] Honors

In 2004, Bulsara was elected to Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) for "developing the statistical mechanics of noisy nonlinear dynamical oscillators especially in the theory, application and technology of stochastic resonance detectors."[17][18] His festschrift in honor of his 55th birthday, for logistic reasons, was held when he was 56.
