Adelanto is a city in San Bernardino County, California about 9 miles northwest of Victorville. The population was 18,130 at the 2000 census.
The name Adelanto means progress or advance in Spanish, and was first given to the post office that was established on the site in 1917.[5]

Adelanto is located in the Mojave Desert at (34.575990, -117.432713)[6].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 138.7 km² (53.5 mi²). 138.6 km² (53.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.04%) is water.
Approximate elevation: 2900 ft.

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 18,130 people, 4,714 households, and 3,841 families residing in the city. The population density was 130.8/km² (338.7/mi²). There were 5,547 housing units at an average density of 40.0/km² (103.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 50.45% White, 13.11% African American, 1.61% Native American, 1.60% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 26.58% from other races, and 6.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 45.77% of the population.
There were 4,714 households out of which 56.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 14.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.53 and the average family size was 3.89.
In the city the population was spread out with 38.0% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 12.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 115.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 123.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,594, and the median income for a family was $35,254. Males had a median income of $33,971 versus $25,807 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,053. About 21.4% of families and 24.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.0% of those under age 18 and 12.8% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Adelanto is located in the 17th and 18th Senate Districts, represented by Republicans George Runner and Roy Ashburn respectively, and in the 36th Assembly District, represented by Republican Sharon Runner. Federally, Adelanto is located in California's 25th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +7[8] and is represented by Republican Buck McKeon.

The El Mirage Dry Lake, located just west of Adelanto, has been used in filming many movies and television commercials, and is popular for racing off-road vehicles and land yachts.

Until 1999, Adelanto had its own police department, but now has contracted out with the Victorville Regional Station of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.[9]
