[edit] History

Adelante was founded by UT Hispanic Journalists in collaboration with the Latino Leadership Council in 2006.[1] Adelante's first issue was published in October of that year, and included news articles about Hispanic student enrollment as well as sections covering food and entertainment in Austin[2]. The newspaper is named Adelante, which is Spanish for "move forward" or "progress".

[edit] Crossing Borders 2008

In April 2008, four Adelante staffers spent a weekend in Brownsville, Texas, where they interviewed residents about issues affecting them, including the planned construction of a wall/fence in the city. Many residents of the Rio Grande Valley expressed concern about plans for the wall to cut through the University of Texas at Brownsville's campus, potentially isolating its International Technology, Education, and Commerce (ITEC) campus south of the wall. The result of the trip was a 9-minute documentary titled "The Wall" as well as short profile stories and a photo essay from Matamoros, Tamaulipas market. The new issue, titled "Crossing Borders/Cruzando Fronteras", was published in print and online during the first week of May 2008. The next issue of Adelante will be released in the fall of 2008; it does not publish during the summer.
