Action of 16 May 1797
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This battle took place on 16 May 1797 near Tripoli (now in Libya).
After Denmark refused a demand by the new ruler of Tripoli for an increased tribute (essentially a bribe to stop Tripolitans preying on Danish merchant ships), Tripoli captured 2 Danish vessels. An attempt was made in late 1796 by Fisker in Thetis 40 to have these returned, but it didn't work, and Bille, in the frigate Najaden 40, with Sarpen 18, and a xebec hired from Malta, arrived at Tripoli and sailed past the forts on 15 May 1797. On the 16th Najaden sailed into the harbor and attacked the 6 armed vessels, drawing them outside. Although the 2 smaller Danish ships were more of a hindrance than a help, the Tripolitans retreated after 2 hours. Danish casualties were 1 killed and 1 wounded.
