[edit] Onomatapoea

From the text: A concrete example of acrophony is in the ancient Phoenician alphabet. The first letter was originally a pictogram representing an ox, and was named after the ox, ʾāleph. The sound represented by the letter is also /a/.

Very likely, this is not only acrophonic, but onomatapoeic, ie matching the sound for the pictogram for 'ox' with the sound made by an ox.

Note that many animal names are in origin onomatopoeic, e.g. Kuh (german, rhymes with who) for cow, Hund (german again, sounds a bit like runt) for dog, (wood)pecker, ... --Philopedia 4 July 2005 14:08 (UTC)
