[edit] Acoustika or Acoustika Trio
Acoustika is the name of a Maltese musical trio who specialise in Spanish or Latin-American music. Originally they consisted of Joseph Micallef of guitars, George Pollacco on guitars and the late Louis Naudi on percussions. Louis Naudi was one of the founders of Voices Choir who are very popular in Malta for their excellent charity concerts. He used to be the drummer in the accompanying band as well.
Sadly Louis Naudi died in September 2004 after about a year at hospital in England for Leukemia.
After Louis Naudi, the trio has engaged various drummers and percussionists depending on availability. Good percussionists the likes of Louis are not easy to find.
Acoustika started off as "The Strings" actually with just Joseph and George playing as a duo. Joseph had many years of experience playing in various local hotels and entertainment spots while George was already a seasoned and renowned guitarist and bassist who had played with the best on the island.
During one of their performances at the Mistra Village Club Hotel, they were approaced by the manager and asked to add a percussionist and start playing regularly as a trio. This is when Louis Naudi came in and its how the name had to be changed. They settled for Acoustika for two main reasons. First the music is acoustic, secondly because at the time they were listening mainly to Acoustic Alchemy. They chose to spell the first part in English, thus "Acoust.." - and the last part in Maltese, thus "..ika". So the word is neither English nor Maltese or Italian. Strangely though after some time the name has appeared, spelt in this same strange way, as the name of other international bands!
Acoustika's success was such that the Mistra Village management sponsored their only CD (on which one can hear Louis Naudi playing)- Acoustic Dream. The CD was aimed at tourists so the majority of the titles are simply familiar cover versions of Latin or Spanish songs interpreted in the inimitable Acoustika style.
