[edit] History

Acme Fresh Market was responsible for two subsidiary stores: Click, a department store and grocery store under one roof, and Y-Mart (derived from Youngfellow Pharmacy), a chain of pharmacy/convenience stores similar to Walgreens. In the mid 1990s, the Click stores were renamed Acme Super Centers. The Y-Mart stores were re-named Acme Express. By the late 1990s, both were closed, as part of the company's effort to close smaller stores and renovate the remaining locations into the rebranded Acme Fresh Market. There are currently sixteen Acme Fresh Market stores, as well as two RSVP Food and Party Outlet locations.

On July 6, 2006, one of Acme's competitors, Tops Markets, announced it was leaving Northeast Ohio and seeking buyers for its 46 stores. Eight locations, some of them originally operated as Finast, are in the Akron area. Acme President Steven T. Albrecht indicated to the Akron Beacon Journal that the company will "review the Tops Stores" to see if any "fit Acme's goals" [4] Acme No. 11, located in Tallmadge, relocated to one of these former Tops stores across the street on May 19, 2007. [5].

On December 4, 2007 Acme Fresh Market announced they have purchased a former Tops location in Parma, Ohio. The new Parma Acme, which will be in the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center, will bring back a grocery store after the Tops closed in December 2006. The company plans on spending $2 million on remodeling the 68,000-square-foot-facility. Opening May 3, 2008. [6]. [7]. [8].

The Parma store will become Acme No. 20.

Many of the locations have undergone remodeling and renovations during the past decade. In the 1999, the Stow location was reduced in size from a Super Center to a Fresh Market. In 2006, the Cuyahoga Falls location on Bailey Road received a much needed overhaul. With the loss of the Kent Giant Eagle in 2007, the Acme in Kent began remodeling and expects to complete work in early 2008.
