Ackuset

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ackuset was a Swedish company that made a product line of sound mixers, power amplifiers, speaker cabinets and tape delays in the 1960's and 70's. The Ackuset PA system for rock band vocalists was quite popular in Scandinavia, including Finland, where it was the first mixer/power amp system on the market which had 5 separate microphone channels with separate bass and treble controls for each mic, and two overall tone control knobs for the power amplifier. The two large speaker cabinets contained two 12 inch heavy duty speakers and a treble horn for enhanced presence each, fed by a 100 W mono power amp. This revolutionary PA system, considered powerful at the time, was reportedly used even by The Hollies and Sandy Shaw, and actually copied by the Finnish sound company Retkusysteemit Oy and sold in Finland under the trade name "Retkut".

Only seventeen larger Ackuset mixer units were ever built, seven still exist today, of which three are functional. The band Franz Ferdinand is known for using its distinct sound on their recordings while the other two can be found in museums. Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand says "It rarely works, but when it does.."[citation needed] "...I just know they sound amazing."[citation needed] The band uses an Ackuset tape delay as well.
