[edit] Notable Events
- On October 4th, 2007, two students from Flora were arrested on charges of disturbing the orderly operation of a school. The students had hung a noose from a tree in a fashion similar to the events that occurred involving the Jena Six. [1] The incident occurred during lunch, and the students were promptly arrested and suspended from school, with a pending expulsion hearing. About 10 minutes before the school day ended, principal Richard McClure made a schoolwide televised announcement explaining the situation, and encouraged tolerance and peace. Regardless, the Richland County Sheriff's Department has announced that they do not intend to try the students for a hate crime. "What they did disturbed the operation of the school," said Richland County sheriff's spokesman Chris Cowan, explaining why the actions were not considered a hate crime. "We believe they did a stupid thing."[2] It is notable that one of the perpetrators was white, and one was African-American.[3] It is claimed that the hanging of the noose was in retaliation for the taking of a football by 2 African-American students, which was later given back.
