Paleontology, palaeontology or palæontology (from Greek: paleo, "ancient"; ontos, "being"; and logos, "knowledge") is the study of prehistoric life forms on Earth through the examination of plant and animal fossils.[1] This includes the study of body fossils, tracks (ichnites), burrows, cast-off parts, fossilized faeces (coprolites), palynomorphs and chemical residues. Paleontology has had a large impact on the modern scientific perspective on the origin of earth's modern biota.

The fossil record provided evidence of changing ecosystems through time, a concept central to the theory of evolution. Charles Darwin, while not being the first scientist to advocate evolutionary ideas, was the first to provide a believable mechanism for biological change over time. His proposed mechanism was natural selection, the process whereby organisms possessing traits favorable in a given environment enjoy increased reproductive success, while those with unfavorable traits leave fewer descendants. Evolution by means of natural selection, as advocated by Darwin, rapidly became an accepted scientific idea and lies at the core of the modern understanding of biology and paleontology. This article records significant discoveries and events relevant to these fields of study which occurred in the year 1699.
