I'm not comfortable with this template including Category:US Government images. Here's why.
First off, and more specifically, this would ordinarily belong to Category:U.S. military images. But that category specifically says it was taken as part of a soldier's official duties. We can't say that, since it hasn't been proven. These photos might have been taken as part of a soldier's official duties, or they might have been taken of their own initiative. We can't say which is true. But we can say that the picture has no legal copyright claim made on it, and is therefore in the public domain. That's why I think it should include Category:Public domain images. For that reason, I'm switching it back. If you disagree, let me know here. – Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 14:42, Oct 22, 2004 (UTC)
- Why are these images "ineligible for copyright", exactly? A picture having "no legal copyright claim made on it" is irrelevant; works are automatically copyrighted unless the creator says otherwise. dbenbenn | talk 22:48, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Any photograph taken by a soldier in the fulfillment of his duties is ineligible for copyright, as it's considered a work of the U.S. Government for copyright reasons. That's the same reason the White House photographer can't claim copyright on pictures he takes while on the job. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 23:46, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
