ADIS was initially based out of the old Indian Social Centre premises beginning in the year 1975. The school was able to have its own premises by 1980, thanks to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's donation of a large plot of land.

The school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Abu Dhabi. It offers full-time education from Kindergarten to Class XII. Boys and girls are gender-segregated in upper primary school and in secondary school.

SSC-level language electives include French and Hindi. HSC-level specializations include Science with Mathematics/Biology/Computer Science/Psychology electives, Commerce with Mathematics/Informatics/Sociology electives, and Arts with Psychology.

Various student associations provide a platform for students to organize activities of interest.

[edit] Prakriti - Nature Club

The Nature Club of the Abu Dhabi Indian School was formally launched in April 1993 with an aim to spread environmental awareness among the students and the community at large, in collaboration with local governmental and non-governmental agencies associated with environment protection.

[edit] Voices - Debating Club

Voices, the debating club of the school was officially instituted in 1999, aimed at improving the student's abilities in public speaking. The club organizes intra- and inter-school debating competitions, and provides a society for students with a shared interest in debating.

[edit] Sports Facilities

The school auditorium doubles as a multi-court badminton hall, with table tennis facilities as well. The 25 m-by-12.5m indoor swimming pool is available for use by the students and members in the Indian community of Abu Dhabi. Students also receive training in swimming as part of their physical education curriculum. Outdoor sports facilities include complete track and field grounds and basketball courts.
