Absolute Garbage is the 2007 greatest hits album from Garbage. Remastered and chronologically running through sixteen of the band's singles, including the successful Billboard Hot 100 hits "Stupid Girl", "Special" and "Why Do You Love Me", their Hot Modern Rock Tracks topping "#1 Crush" and Bond theme "The World Is Not Enough". The album also included a brand new track, specially recorded for the compilation, "Tell Me Where It Hurts" and a brand new remix of non-single "It's All Over But the Crying".

Absolute Garbage was first released on July 23, 2007 on CD and a limited edition which included a second disc of remixes. A DVD format rounded out the package; among the fifteen Garbage music videos included is an hour-long documentary film titled "Thanks For Your, Uhhh Support" featuring footage filmed backstage and behind-the-scenes, and archive live performances and interviews spanning the band's entire career. [1]

The new song "Tell Me Where It Hurts" preceded the album at radio across the world, with a July 16 physical single release in the United Kingdom. [2] A second single release, for "It's All Over but the Crying" on September 10 was cancelled. [3]

[edit] Compiling the album

Butch Vig was the first band member to confirm that Garbage was going to work on new tracks for the project, including recording new songs, telling MTV "We've been working on Absolute Garbage for a while". [4] Garbage had been sharing song ideas via the internet and were keen on getting into the recording studio to complete them [5] Garbage had ended their eighteen-month hiatus on January 31, 2007, at a benefit show in Glendale, California, organised by Vig to help pay musician Wally Ingram's medical care following treatment for throat cancer. [6]

Garbage began work on the new songs in earnest during February and March 2007 at Vig's home studio in Los Angeles, [7] completing four tracks - "Tell Me Where It Hurts", "Betcha", "All The Good In This Life" and "Girls Talk Shit". [8] Of the four songs, only "Tell Me Where It Hurts" made the album, while of the other three songs, one ended up a b-side, [1] one an iTunes bonus [9] and one remaining unreleased respectively.

[edit] New songs and remixes

Garbage completed two versions of "Tell Me Where It Hurts": an orchestral version and a "Guitars Up" mix with a rockier arrangement, the latter being used on Absolute Garbage and the "Tell Me Where It Hurts" music video and released on the single. [10] The orchestral version of the song, titled "Un Belle du Jour mix", was released digitally in August on iTunes UK store. [11]

Vig had "goofed around" with Bleed Like Me track "Bad Boyfriend" in 2006 while updating his home studio, and while putting the Absolute Garbage package together thought it could be included. Rather than soliciting an outside record producer to remix the song Vig finished it himself. When he presented it to the rest of Garbage, they agreed the remix should be included on the album. [7] The new version was subtitled "Sting Like A Bee remix", and was first released on the 7" of "Tell Me Where It Hurts" as well as on the two-disc edition of Absolute Garbage (as "Garbage remix"). [1]

Garbage did send at least two tracks for remixing: Jeremy Wheatley remixed "It's All Over But The Crying", [12] which became the final track on Absolute Garbage and Chris Sheldon completed a rockier version of "Push It" which was playlisted by XFM prior to the albums release. [13]

Besides the remix of "Bad Boyfriend", all of the remixes on the Garbage Mixes disc had been released previously on their respective singles, but all had been remastered and some edited for Absolute Garbage. The remix of "When I Grow Up" is incorrectly credited to Kagz Kooner, but is actually by Danny Tenaglia.

[edit] Release history

Garbage disbanded for a temporary hiatus following their October 1, 2005, show in Perth, Australia, also the last commitment on the Bleed Like Me tour fulfilled; later European dates had been cancelled prior. [14] A month later on November 17, music retailer HMV's UK website listed an album compilation under the title of Best Of for release the following year. [15] A day later, the title was changed to Greatest Hits and by January 13, 2006 HMV yet again changed their listing for the album: a second title change to Absolute Garbage. [16]

On November 10, a press release from Warner Music Group announced a March 19, 2007 UK release date and tracklist for the album.[17] NME reported that the album would be preempted by a release of a single on March 5. The title of the single was not confirmed - conflicting reports stated it was a brand new song; some said the single would be "It's All Over but the Crying", a Bleed Like Me track which had been considered as the third U.S. single from that album.[18]

On May 11, an official post at the band's website announced that Absolute Garbage would be released soon. This posting was the first official confirmation of the project following 18 months of rumour and conjecture. [19] On May 22, Absolute Garbage and its tracklisting and format combinations were confirmed via their official website for a July 16/17 release. [1] The album's release date was later changed to July 23/24 [20] due to production issues with the North American DVD release. [21]

Absolute Garbage is the title for Garbage's 2007 DVD compilation of fifteen music videos, released in North America, United Kingdom and Europe simultaneously alongside the greatest hits album of Absolute Garbage. It is the band's first DVD album release, and their first commercial video compilation released since the 1996 VHS and Video-CD compilation Garbage Video.

Region 1 releases do not include the video for "Tell Me Where It Hurts". Region 0 pressings of Absolute Garbage contain all sixteen music videos to accompany the singles contained on the CD format [1] (with the exception of "#1 Crush" for which there was no clip filmed [38]).

It also contains a bonus hour-long documentary titled "Thanks For Your Uhh, Support" featuring footage filmed backstage and behind-the-scenes, and archive live performances and interviews spanning the band's entire career. [1]

In advance of 2008's 50th Grammy Awards, Geffen Records submitted Absolute Garbage for consideration for Best Long Form Music Video. [39] However it failed to pick up a nomination. [40]
