Abkhazian parliamentary election, 2007

Parliamentary elections were held in the unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia on 4 March 2007; a run-off round was held in seventeen constituencies on 18 March 2007.[1] 189 polling stations have been organized[2] to elect 35 parliament members. 47.25% of about 130,000 registered voters participated in the first round of the elections.[3] Neither Georgia nor EU recognised these elections citing lack of participation of Georgian refugees.[4]

128 candidates have been registered to run. The number included:

Sergei Bagapsh, the President of Abkhazia, stressed the necessity of having a multiethnic parliament, where all the minorities will be represented. He also stated that the prevailing issue of the election campaign will be achieving the international recognition for the de facto independent state.[5]

28 of the 35 elected candidates are supporters of president Bagapsh, while the other 7 are opposition members.[1] 26 of the elected candidates are Abkhazians, three are Russians, three are Armenians, two are Georgians and one is a Turk.[2]
