Abigail Hearns is a fictional character in the Honorverse. She holds the rank of Lieutenant in the Grayson Space Navy, and is a Grayson princess - the oldest child of Aaron Hearns, Steadholder Owens. Her title is Miss Owens. She is third in line for the steadholdership under Grayson law, which applied a form of primogeniture, as she has two younger brothers.
(David Weber has stated on Baen's Bar that Abigail was the oldest child. Ashes of Victory said she was the third daughter. He also noted that before the 'Mayhew Restoration' women had been unable to inherit titles, and that a clause was added to ensure the accession of male heirs living at the time of the reforms)
Abigail was 19 (terran years) as of Ashes of Victory. Noted as being tall for a Grayson, willowy and attractive. Her brunette hair was worn waist-length.
She would have been approximately 8 during The Honor of the Queen. She witnessed the Second Battle of Yeltsin's Star and apparently caught a case of heroine-worship regarding Honor Harrington.
She is the first Grayson-born woman to hold a GSN commission, and the first Grayson-born woman to attend the Royal Manticoran Naval Academy at Saganami Island. She was one of Admiral Harrington's star pupils. She was ranked 14th in her class and 6th in the tactical curriculum. In her first form this class had over 11,000 students.
She completed her 'Snotty' (Midshipman) cruise on the Edward Saganami B-class heavy cruiser HMS Gauntlet, under the command of Captain Michael Oversteegen in The Service of the Sword. She and a party of Marines were stranded on the planet Refuge in the Tiberian system and hunted by pirates crewing a heavy cruiser. She was decorated for courage under fire.
She was subsequently commissioned as an Ensign.
By her appearance in The Shadow of Saganami she had been promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade). She served as Assistant Tactical Officer aboard the Edward Saganami C-class heavy cruiser HMS Hexapuma, under Captain Aivars Terekhov, accordingly also serving as Officer Candidate Training Officer. In this capacity she trained Helen Zilwicki, Ragnhild Pavletic, Aikawa Kagiyama, Paulo d'Arezzo and Leopold Stottmeister on their first cruise.
She was brevetted to Lieutenant during that book, and it is presumed she retained that rank.
Her bodyguard is Lieutenant Mateo Gutierrez (an Owens armsman and former RMMC sergeant who fought with her at Tiberian), assigned to her as a condition of her being on active duty.
