[edit] Welcome to the Military history WikiProject!
Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated quite regularly. You can watch it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- The project has a monthly newsletter; it will normally be delivered as a link, but several other formats are available.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.
- Interested in working on a more complete article? The military history peer review and collaboration departments would welcome your help!
- Interested in a particular area of military history? We have a number of task forces that focus on specific nations or periods.
- Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every military history article in Wikipedia.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 03:35, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] JV 44
Hello, if you don't mind would you have a look at the JV 44 article and give me some improvement comments? I drew the squadron symbol myself by looking at old phtographs. I also have a list of known members, etc. in EXCEL. If you could give me a tip on where to put it within the article and how to structure the table I would get to work on it. The 61 names I have come from a book about JV 44, and the columns in the table would include name, rank, decorations (e.g. Knight's Cross), role within JV44, last known previous unit, victories and total sorties flown. Maybe a column for comments too. I worry the table is too big so any advice on formatting, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I want to get it looking good before seeking a peer review. Thanks. - Sure thing - I'll make a post on the JV 44 talk page. Abel29a 17:52, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Regarding the Rommel article
You have taken it upon yourself to introduce what you consider to be grammatical and stylistic improvements (there benefit has eluded my grasp), as well as to completely rewrite the whole part concerning operation "Crusader". The result of your industry strike me as a much glossier and sanitised version of Rommel's actions, ommiting all reference to his disputes with, and abuse of subordinate commanders who disagreed with his rash and overambitious decisions and were invariably proven correct, and a strange and even more prettifying misrepresentation of British decision making during Crusader. You even went so far as to claim that it was concern to relieve the overburdened Italian, rather than arrogance, that led Rommel to attempt to develop the counterattack against the British in Crusader into an all out effort to roll them from their forifications along the Libyan-Egyption border. Where did that come from? There was no pressure against the Italians at that point or against the Germans either, for that matter, since the British were in full headlong retreat. We have crossed pathes before, I am Soz from the Manstein article, and while I did not treasure your input there, I could at least recognise that you had an arguable position, but your editing here is quite frankly horrifying. Tragically I cannot simply revert to a previous version not elevated by your relentless improving since contributions to entirely unrelated sections had since been inserted and it would be unfair of me to undo them in an effort to dispose of your, well, not to mince words, mischief. At some point I shall have to correct the distortion and rewrite the section, bringing it closer to its original form, whereupon I beg you most humbly not to engage in any kind of improvement. Soz
- Oh hi again Soz :) Another German general you despise.... The information about Crusader came form the Crusader article here on Wikipedia. Rewriting the article to get it more neutral and remove all that bad language and unsourced accustaions is not mischief. That being said I shall go over the edits I made and reinstate if I left something vital out. The grammatical and stylistic improvements were very much needed as the text was ranting on for ever and had very much bad language. Abel29a 16:36, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Battle of Britain
Regarding your edit comment: You are absolutely right, I didn't even notice all those other Harvard references to Deighton. Obviously I need to get a copy of that book as soon as possible, the one by Allen aswell. I'm not sure what you mean by preventing people having to 'hunt' through the notes list though, why would they have to do that? Kind regards, Mumby 10:53, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well its probably more of a personal preference of mine, but when, as in some articles, all the references used are in the notes list it can become a bit difficult to see what books exactly are used as references, as the number of notes can be quite substantial. Therefore I prefer to have all the books listed in a separate bibliography as well, altough I'm not sure if this is according to Wikipedia standards :) Abel29a 11:25, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I see what you mean. One problem I have noticed is that often the notes, references and bibliography sections are not used according to the guidlines set out in the manual of style. The notes section should really be just for footnotes, referneces for citations from the text, and bibliogrpahy for further reading. I see what you mean about listing all the books and other sources in the bibliography, but this would be very long (as it is now!). I'm sure we'll sort it all out. Regards,Mumby 11:59, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Erwin Rommel
Dear Abel, I've semi-protected the article as you requested. I re-read Rommels' entry every now and then, and I believe it's not uncommon for it to both get vandalized and edit-warred, judging from its talk page - I believe it has even been fuly protected at some point. And not only this article, but Heinz Guderian and Karl Doenitz too. So, thank you for bringing this to my attention, and let me know if this continues after the semi-protection expires, and I'll see what to do. Tusen takk! :) Phaedriel - 19:20, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- Cheers, appreciate it - maybe I can get around to doing some proper editing now :) Abel29a 19:25, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Dasreichsymbol.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Dasreichsymbol.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:59, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:11 Flottille Emblem.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:11 Flottille Emblem.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
[edit] Unspecified source for Image:11 Flottille Emblem.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:11 Flottille Emblem.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:51, 16 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Reinhard Hardegen
Great job expanding Reinhard Hardegen from a Stub but, do you have references for the information that you added? Cheers, CP 16:25, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed - I'll add some refs (from Operation Drumbet by Michael Gannon) to the info posted during the weekend. Just fleshing out the article with uboat.net info atm. Abel29a 16:34, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
-
- Excellent, just making sure. Great job thus far! Cheers, CP 17:17, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I went over Reinhard Hardegen and corrected all the grammatical and spelling errors. If you want to further improve the article, here are my suggestions:
- All articles require, at minimum, one inline citation per paragraph. If you got the information from his uboat.net page, then you can just add the tag <ref name="Uboat"/> at the end of the chunk of information/paragraph.
- The image that you've uploaded does not qualify for fair use, as Hardegen is still alive.
- The lead should be expanded to cover every major point in the article, and nothing should be introduced in the article that isn't discussed in the body of the article.
I think you've put an amazing amount of effort into it and I'd love to see this article get GA status at least. I'm a GA reviewer, so this weekend I can work on the article a bit myself as well and fix the things that I would usually point out in a review myself. After the above points are met, I would recommend nominating it for a peer review so that it can rated to B status, and helpful military-specific tips that I might miss can be added. Not only that, but WP:MH is very good with keeping on top of their reviews. I would do the above points first, however, since those three will be the first things that they'll comment on. Cheers, CP 18:49, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Battle of Britain GA Sweeps Review: On Hold
As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "Conflicts, battles and military exercises" articles and just reviewed Battle of Britain. I believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues considering sourcing that should be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I am leaving this message on your page since you are a significant contributor to the article (based on using WikiDashboard) and figured you might be interested in helping to improve the article further. The article needs some more inline citations, and if added, I'll pass the article. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 05:15, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Operation Barbarossa
Hi, This is just an invitation to get together at the Operation Barbarossa discussion page and see if the article can't be improved to the FA level. I am going to try and firstly restructure and later rewrite the article in my sandbox (firstly at home on my PC), but I have already discussed some ideas with one other contributor and would appreciate more input from members of the task force.--Mrg3105 (talk) 23:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be some issues going on over on the article : Military history of African Americans, in particularly in the section Military history of African Americans#Confederate States Army. Could you take a look at the article's edit history as well as the discussion, Talk:Military history of African Americans, and possibly give some input? Thanks. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Adolf Galland portrait.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Adolf Galland portrait.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
-
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
