Abdul Haq served as a translator for the Northern Alliance after the fall of the Taliban, in the fall of 2001.^[1]

Guantanamo detainee Gholam Ruhani described being asked by Haji Mohammed Hotak to translate between Hotak and Haji Ghulan Mohammad, two Northern Alliance leaders, and the Americans.^[1] Mohammad's entourage included someone named Abdul Haq, who was a better translator than he was. So he went and had some tea, while Haq translated, only to find himself being taken into custody by the Americans, Ruhani attributed his capture to something Haq had said.
