[edit] Personality
A quirky technogeek in the mold of The X-Files ' Lone Gunmen, Abby is best known for her gothic style of dress, with at least nine tattoos on her neck, arms, back, ankle and other places which are only hinted at; while some of the tattoos are genuine—Pauley Perrette has had them done—the large cross on the back is makeup added for the rare occasions Perrette shows her bare back on camera. The spiderweb in her neck is not real either; producer Donald Bellisario wanted the character to have a tattoo that would be visible the whole time. Her style of clothing often includes short skirts and platform boots. She also states several times that she sleeps in a coffin, and in episode "Hiatus", she says she has a hearse, which has flat tires all the time. Despite her "dark" fashion sense, Abby has a happy-go-lucky attitude and a sweet personality.
Abby is a hearing child of a deaf mother and likes her music loud. Abby also, similarly to Gibbs, thrives on caffeine but unlike Gibbs, who drinks a lot of coffee, she prefers to have it in the form of a soda, called a "Caf-Pow". She gets rewards of Caf-Pows from Gibbs when she gives him answers. When changing the artwork in her lab, she states that she has a "Chagall feeling"—a reference to Marc Chagall, a Belo-Russian artist whose main works come from fantasy and dreams.
Abby's Top 3 "worst ways to die" are: 1.Being eaten by a shark, 2. Drowning in lava, and 3. Falling into a woodchipper.[1]
[edit] Background
Abby is from New Orleans, Louisiana where she graduated with full honors from LSU with a triple major in sociology, criminology and psychology. She earned her master's degree from Georgia State University in criminology and forensic science (Perrette also has a Master's Degree in Criminology, and has toured the real NCIS offices to meet with the real forensic specialists; the source of her interest in forensics is the same as her character's: living near a wrecking yard and being intrigued by the cause and effect of the wrecks).
Abby is extremely well-versed in her field of study, rarely stumped by the evidentiary puzzles which Gibbs' team present to her; she has been shown to exhibit an almost religious zeal for the field of forensics. Also, she does all the work on the evidence herself. In season 3, when she is given an "assistant", Chip Sterling, she revolts, but puts up with him. He ends up trying to frame DiNozzo, causing Abby to obsess with finding the exonerating evidence. After she exonerates DiNozzo, Chip attempts to kill Abby, who is able to easily incapacitate him. She has not had another assistant since.
She also once said, as a threat against McGee, 'I am one of the few people in the world who can murder you and leave no forensic evidence.' She was in the science club in high school. She hates being called Abigail, but will tolerate it from Ducky in certain situations.
Abby is 25+ years old. In "Model Behaviour" (Season 3, Episode 11), Abby comments that she has been thinking about horrible ways to die "on and off for the last 25 years."
Abby is fluent in sign language because her mother is deaf; Gibbs mentioned it to DiNozzo in episode Seadog. She calls her mother, Gloria, by her first name [2]. She has an uncle named Larry who owned a bar, a grandmother who was an Olympic swimmer and a younger brother (name unrevealed). In Episode "Bikini Wax (2005)", Abby may have revealed to McGee that she used to be on the bikini contest circuit, although it may have been in jest. She is friends with a group of nuns who love to go on spiritual retreats. She has stayed with them during some episodes.
[edit] Relationships
She gets on well with all the rest of the team, particularly Tony, and is fond of Ducky who refers to her as "Abigail".
Uniquely, she shows no fear of Gibbs. Though some fans believe the relationship to be strictly father-daughter, possibly literally-- Gibbs had a daughter by his first wife, from whom he was estranged approximately ten years ago (both referenced to Ducky in Season 2 while trying to keep a serial masochist on death row) and Gibbs knows sign language but has never explained why. There is no conclusive evidence to support or deny this theory. The kisses (on the cheek) and hugs they share with each other are present in many episodes, plus the fact that Gibbs brings her her favorite beverage, Caf-Pow, on many occasions. Gibbs also shows a tolerance for and a protectiveness over Abby, in particular when she is almost shot in Kill Ari Part 1, when the new regime (Season 3) attempts to force her to observe the dress code, and when her ex-boyfriend stalks her (Bloodbath).
Abby was a close friend of former team mate Caitlin Todd (Kate). References exist to them hanging out after work and Kate even having been talked into getting a tattoo. During the time the team was having trauma-induced hallucinations of deceased agent Todd, Abby's imaginary Caitlin appeared as a goth figure with long, pure white hair who comforted her. Abby was rigid towards Ziva at first, as Ziva was linked with Ari, who killed Kate (Silver War). Abby eventually came round and Ziva and she are friends.
She has an impressive list of ex-boyfriends, including a gemologist (Benjamin) and a NASA satellite technician (Ashton), and she's still on good terms with most of them. She was briefly stalked by an ex-boyfriend (Mikel Mawher) who was caught in the episode "Bloodbath". She gave him a straitjacket for his birthday. Abby's first time for sex was in 'the backseat of a cab but sort of on the front seats too' [3].
She had a relationship with McGee which she stated that she would like to keep casual. Although the relationship ended early in season two, she has since exhibited jealousy over the attention that McGee gives to Ziva.
Abby has a close relationship with the sisters from her bowling team, who are nuns. She once stayed at their house, only to be woken by a homicidal obsessive, who was later taken into custody by the team.(Cover Story)
[edit] Traits

She is able to communicate in American Sign Language because her parents are deaf. Gibbs can also communicate in sign language. Abby can also lip-read as seen in the episode "Sandblast". She invented a new technique to clean up surveillance video in the episode "Terminal Leave". She considers submitting a paper entitled Digital Optical Enhancement of Reflective Surfaces with Scattered Refractive Properties to a forensics journal. She is able to manufacture fake IDs easily, according to the episode "Split Decision": "Please Gibbs, I've been making fake IDs since I was 15," which hints at a misspent youth. She was arrested in 1990 for indecent exposure at a Rolling Stones concert in Los Angeles. Abby is very computer savvy, on par with McGee's abilities.
Abby is addicted to a drink called Caf-Pow, which appears to be orange or pink in color; possibly a soda. The rest of the team are fully aware of this and frequently bribe her with large cups of it. In the Season 4 Episode "Once a Hero", Abby argues that coffee could be considered a fruit juice in response to the statement that the Caf-Pow is not fruit juice. A clear close-up of the cup shows "X-Treme Caffeine" as the sub-title to Caf-Pow!
Abby has a Top 3 "worst ways to die" - 1. Falling into a woodchipper. 2. Drowning in lava. 3.Being eaten by a shark. [4]
Abby uses the IM screenname "abbsolute" (as seen in the Season 4 episode "Skeletons").
Abby also has a stuffed collar-wearing hippo named Bert, which produces a farting noise when squeezed (introduced in "Twilight", and brought back in Season 3 episodes "Silver War", "Ravenous", "Untouchable" and "Cover Story").
Abby also seems to think that Gibbs is "psychic" because he always seems to appear whenever she has something new in the way of evidence. (First mentioned in the episode "Iceman" when she asks him: 'Do you think it's ESP?' )
Abby likes to listen to music in her lab by such bands as Suicide Commando, Brain Matter, Flesh Eating Foundation, Green Satan, and Android Lust (mentioned in the beginning of the episode "Ex-Files").
Abby is fond of giving people hugs, as an answer to any problem. She also invented a squg (squatting hug) as an explanation to Gibbs for why she was in a strange position with McGee.
Abby is 5'10" tall. She can find out almost any code on a computer, and seems to have infinite knowledge of the machines.
