[edit] Additional Info

Hi Aaron, finally, you were the author of the article Alec Campbell... Thatswhy I reckon you are interested in the page you contributed. I forgot to mention, i have some more info in my news archive about the state funeral with pictures and another article here. If you find it necessery, the info and pics are "friendly permitted" to use on Wikipedia. Sure there is more in the archive, but i have to add a search function first to find it back!!

cheers Heiko

[edit] Thanks

Dear Aaron,

thank you very much for your additional work on the article Alec Campbell. Today i was going to add more internal links, you have done that already. A perfect teamwork, thanx once more. By the way, about the copyrights: I have has well crown copyright permission of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, New Zealand. You may have seen my homepage, i wish i would have some more time to make the history information more than it actually is at this stage. I live in Turkey and i have lots of friends living and having businesses at Gallipoli (please see for example the homepage of journalist Ayhan Oncu, with lots of info and pics about last ANZAC Day, that gives me always the chance beeing always up to date about ANZAC Day themes.

Many greetings, and keep up the good work

[edit] LAST ANZAC

Dear Aaron, i can tell you that i am really unhappy about the fact that you did remove my contribution about Alec Campbell. Your note: "(rvt, previous edit copyvio from [www.anzacday.org.au/education/activities/alec_campbell/images/alec_campbell.pdf])" is not true at all, mate. You are dreaming. I spent a good time on it, to review the page of Alec Campbell. The page was very poor before, like it is again now after your removal. Parts of the text i used there (but not 100% equal), is from my own website www.anzacday.info exactly hosted at www.anzacday.biz/anzac_history/last_anzac.htm Some of the facts on my homepage about Alec Campbell are with permission from www.defence.gov.au, perrmission granted to me in 2003. Last week when i found the Wikipedia page, i really liked to spend my time to contribut here as well, but now i became sick of it. Aaron, better you do everything on Wikipedia yourself.

regards Heiko

[edit] Aaron, if you find a copyright infringement

It is not the job of rank-and-file Wikipedians to police content for possible copyright infringement, but if you suspect one, you should at the very least bring up the issue on that page's talk page. Others can then examine the situation and take action if needed. The most helpful piece of information you can provide is a URL or other reference to what you believe may be the source of the text.

Some cases will be false alarms. For example, if the contributor was in fact the author of the text that is published elsewhere under different terms, that does not affect their right to post it here under the GFDL. Also, sometimes you will find text elsewhere on the Web that was copied from Wikipedia. In both of these cases, it is a good idea to make a note in the talk page to discourage such false alarms in the future. -olympos2

[edit] Aaron, read carefully and avoid Copyright Paranoia

A trend I am observing on Wikipedia is excessive paranoia about copyright infringements. While a certain amount of preventive action is certainly necessary, I strongly oppose simply deleting an entry for "presumed" copyright violations.

Examples:

An entry which contains a few copied phrases from individual websites or other sources. Quotation, even without attribution, is specifically allowed in international copyright law, and single sentences are generally not protectable. A digitized picture that may be copied from elsewhere, but has in fact been created hundreds of years ago. Sometimes, the companies who have digitized these pictures claim copyright on them, but I find such claims highly dubious. Screenshots of free software applications, and small illustrative screenshots. It should generally be no problem if a screenshot is copied from the official product page. These are cases where I would generally not delete the entry unless the alleged copyright holder complains. Given Wikipedia's potential liability, after a complaint, immediate action may be necessary, although later correction is possible. But it is not Wikipedians' job to excessively "police" content for copyright infringements, especially when such may not even exist.

In general, when in doubt, do not delete. When "fairly certain", ask the author first in /Talk. The notion of "intellectual property" is dubious at best, and Wikipedia should not support it beyond the limits given by law. Personally, I will restore any entries which I do not see as copyright infringements, and I encourage you to do the same. -olympos2

[edit] politics

gedday, just for the record i've never voted Liberal in my life... but I am concerned about critical links as criticism is really the role of the opposing party. It just seems like a controversy that could be legitamately skipped by letting the political parties play their role... just a thought, best wishes Erich 03:19, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

But its probably POV to only state the views of one side in an encylcopedia.. even if it is the side of the party that the article is about. -Aaron Hill 06:31, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)
the problem with all external links is they have their own agenda (without having even looked at the ones you have added - so i talk of principles). To me, an internal link to all the opposition parties provides a more reliable, verifiable, summary of the alternatives... but you clearly care more than me so i will retract again to my fields of interest. Erich 07:02, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Melbourne articles

Hey there, I don't know if you've checked up on the WikiProject Melbourne recently, but a few of us have decided to adopt an article or two. The idea is to pick a lacking article and "be in charge" of it - do the research, writing, maybe even picture-taking. We're trying to build up the number of qualiy articles, instead of thinly-spread stubs. Don't feel you have to do anything :), but if you want, pick an article and add yourself to the list. [edit] Australian wikipedians' message board

Hi Aaron. I've created a page (with an idea blatantly plagiarised from our Irish counterparts) where any interested Australians can get together and coordinate efforts to fill some of the (rather large) holes in Australian content. If you're interested, it's at Wikipedia:Australian wikipedians' notice board. Any assistance you could give would be appreciated. Ambi 05:56, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] New "Torrens Title" page.

Have started new page on Torrens Title, which was of course invented in South Australia.

Aaron does not seem have have this one on his list.

[edit] Torrens Title again.

Thank you Aaron for redoing the Torrens Title Page so quickly. TT is something all South Australians can be proud of (plus Australians in general).

I have put in both way links to and from the Mortgage and Easement pages, to help give TT a bit more credit and exposure.

Syd1435 04:15, 2004 Oct 2 (UTC)

[edit] Gay and lesbian members of parliament

I saw your edit summary comment on Bob Brown - to the best of my knowledge, Brown was the first openly gay senator, Brian Greig the second, and Penny Wong the first lesbian. Ambi 06:30, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

No worries. I'd have done the same, and if he gives us any more trouble, I'll start looking through the blocking policy to see what can be done. Ambi 06:41, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Adelaide city infobox

Hi Aaron, I noticed your addition of the infobox to the Adelaide page, which looks great. I noticed other cities' articles are lacking similar information. I was planning on adding them - do you have a specific sources for the data (so that I don't use conflicting info?) -- Chuq 06:49, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Nomination vote

Hey, thanks for the vote! A real confidence boost, especially when I'm feeling down =) - Ta bu shi da yu 12:43, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Sir Robert Menzies

Hi Aaron. I was wondering why you put Robert Menzies' date of death as 10 October 2004 in the infobox you added to his page. I saw it, and looked in the history for the anonymous user who had (I thought) vandalised the page, but was shocked to realise you had added it. Was this a mistake? Or some sort of political statement relating to the outcome of the federal election? (if it is, I don't understand it). I have fixed it up now. - Mark 13:46, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Fair enough. I jumped to conclusions. Sorry. :) - Mark 06:06, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] frame vs floating

Believe it or not I actually prefer the "unframed" style as it takes up less space and looks more like an encyclopedia, it is a touch self-righteous on your part to assume that my way is "incorrect" and to make suggestions that I learn to do it your way (FYI I made two seperate previews and compared the framed vs floating look before deciding to go with the floating version). In any case I'll accept the will of the people, I seem to be in the minority in preferring unframed images.

I've had a recent run-in with an Australian ex-pat on another page (concerning a caption) it would be rather disappointing if wikipedia is filled with Australians thinking that their creative preferences are inherently "right". I only joined less than a month ago, I hope this isn't the typical wikipedia experience.

I know you were trying to help but this was a case of creative differences.

[edit] Election FAC

I responded on the page, but do you really think it's necessary to object because there are a handful of seats still undecided? They're unlikely to change radically now, and the article is being updated with the handful of very minor developments just about daily by Adam and others. It just seems to me like a bit of a waste of time to have to put this through FAC again in two weeks time because of this. Ambi 09:39, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Starta Title follows on from Torrens Title

[edit] ALP and White Australia

It is annoying, but I feel we should try a bit more dialogue. I've left a message at his talk page, hopefully he'll respond to that. I think he's got into his head that were all a cabal of conservative editors: hopefully we can at least disabuse him of that notion. Lacrimosus 03:50, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] O-Bahn

Hi! Your edit on O-Bahn caused the loss of some information to that article. Please make sure all info stays included in the article unless you know it to be factually incorrect, or make a redirect to a more complete article (again making sure no info is lost). Thank you for your time. Mgm|(talk) 11:34, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)

Since you moved the info to another article, O-Bahn was left with less info. Maybe making a redirect to the page you moved it to is a good idea, so people don't run into the page you removed the info from. Mgm|(talk) 11:40, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)
Yep, I just read your msg on the O-Bahn talk page. Are you happy with keeping the info on both pages? Mgm|(talk) 11:43, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick responses. I'll be eagerly awaiting the additions. You're right, if the changes you suggested are made, there's no more overlap to worry about. Please let me known when you finish and don't forget to mention the difference between a tram and an O-Bahn. :) Mgm|(talk) 11:56, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

I’m curious why you’re curious ;-)? I am not formally affiliated with any political party. My sympathies do, however, extend to the ALP and the Democrats (but not the Greens). I haven’t been able to reconcile my reservations about the ALP's structure and have shied away from joining it as yet. Similarly, I’ve been reluctant to align entirely with the Democrats because of concerns about their ability and future. Though I'd like to maintain as much anonymity as possible, I suppose there's no harm in revealing that I am studying a BA in Politics, International Relations and French. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Don dunstan.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Don dunstan.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
