Ashutosh and Tehzeeb
Ashutosh and Tehzeeb

Salaam-e-Ishq is the story of 6 couples from different parts of the world. Ignorant about each others' existence, they end up being brought together by destiny, fate, and love.

The first couple profiled is Ashutosh (John Abraham) and Tehzeeb (Vidya Balan). Their relationship is made of sweet and saccharine moments as they seamlessly work together to make their two-year-old love marriage a success. Ashutosh is Hindu while Tehzeeb is Muslim. Because of this, their families disapproved of their marriage, resulting in estrangement between the parents and children. Ashutosh is an editor at a television news channel, while Tehzeeb is a field reporter at the same. However, their small but happy world is soon disrupted when Tehzeeb meets with a tragic accident on the job, resulting in retrograde amnesia. The amnesia completely robs her of her memories of the previous two years, including all memory of Ashutosh. Ashutosh works doggedly to try to rekindle even the slightest memory in Tehzeeb's mind, but is unsuccessful. At one point, Tehzeeb even resists his efforts and tries to run away, but Ashutosh finds her with the help of someone else. Finally, Tehzeeb tearfully decides to leave Ashutosh, as she has no recollection of him and cannot stand to see him suffer. All Ashutosh is left with is fragments of his love for Tehzeeb.

Cut to Raju Taxiwala (Govinda) and Stephanie (Shannon Esrechowitz), both of whom are involved in a silent, unspoken relationship of distance. It just so happened that Raju had met this lovely blonde girl 15 years before at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, but lost touch with her. Now, year after year, he stands in the queue for passengers and silently hopes that one of them is Stephanie. Surprisingly, one day she arrives; however, as Raju heartbreakingly discovers, it is not for him, but for her boyfriend Rohit Chaddha. Out of love, Raju helps Stephanie find Rohit, driving her all across northern India, only to learn that Rohit is getting married to a woman of his mother's choice.

From New Delhi, the story moves to London where we meet a middle-aged couple. Vinay Malhotra (Anil Kapoor) and his wife Seema (Juhi Chawla) are introduced. Theirs is a happy, stable family that has all the luxuries of suburban life, including two children (one boy and one girl). Vinay has all he needs, yet is restless and quickly growing bored of his average middle-class life. This is when he comes across Anjali (Anjana Sukhani), who is a modern London-based girl with unmatched confidence and determination. She wants everything, including Vinay. Vinay is not sure of what he wants, and begins an affair with Anjali. He realises that he is making a mistake, and starts to avoid her. Irritated that he is not returning her calls, Anjali visits Vinay at his office and invites him to go to Paris with her, as she is studying there on a dance scholarship. While the two are talking, Seema walks in and finds out about the affair. When the couple reach home, they discuss what has happened, and Vinay says that he wants more out of life. Seema says she only wants him to be content, and decides to leave Vinay. She leaves the country with her children to attend her younger sister Gia's wedding. Vinay goes for a walk to sort out his problems.

Meanwhile, Gia (Ayesha Takia) and her fiancé Shiven (Akshaye Khanna) have problems of their own. They are engaged, but Shiven gets cold feet. After all, his privacy is in danger here. He breaks the engagement and, in the process, Gia's heart. All is well except for one thing – Shiven wants Gia back as he has realized what she means to him. However, Gia's father has now arranged her marriage with Rohit, Stephanie's boyfriend. Shiven tells Gia that he loves her and asks her to come back to him. She refuses, and tells him that she is marrying someone else. Shiven is devastated, and does not know what to do. Later, he accidentally runs Tehzeeb (who had run away from Ashutosh) over with his car, and when he takes her back to his house along with Ashutosh, he sees how much the couple love each other. Shiven realizes that he loves Gia too much to let her marry someone else, and decides to find her.

The story now moves to the world of superstars. A Bollywood superstar who goes by the name of Kkamini (Priyanka Chopra) has only one problem with her career – she is a superstar, but is known as an "item girl" rather than a full-blown heroine. She dreams of being a heroine, but cannot avoid the media, who are damaging her chances at shedding her "item girl" reputation by exposing one scandal of hers after another. Kkamini finally hatches a plan to rid herself of her image and become a full-fledged heroine once and for all. In order to get a lead role in a Karan Johar film, she announces to the press that she is in a serious relationship with a man named "Rahul," who in reality does not exist at all. However, the arrival of a stranger claiming to be Rahul (Salman Khan) changes everything for her. Rahul demands 1 crore rupees; Kkamini reluctantly agrees as she does not want her scheme to be exposed and so she pretends to be in love with Rahul. After some time, however, she realizes that she is truly falling in love with him. In London, Rahul finally pretends to propose to her in front of the media and she accepts, but then Rahul says that he will pretend to die. Later on, Rahul reveals to Kkamini that he has loved her since before she was famous, because she used to sing at a hotel in Dehra Dun where he worked as a waiter. Rahul asks Kkamini to marry him, but at the cost of her career. She wants to agree, but at that moment, her secretary comes in and says that Karan Johar is announcing his next film. In a rush Kkamini says that she must be selected for it, and Rahul says that he will pretend to die. Kkamini is confused so she rushes back to the hotel, but when she reaches there she finds that Rahul has already left, and she is surrounded by reporters asking her questions about Rahul's death. A distraught Kkamini begins to cry, and her secretary realises that she loves Rahul. The secretary suggests that they go looking for Rahul. She is still confused, and ends up meeting a similarly-confused Vinay in a bar at 2 am. Kkamini tells Vinay about the lie, and Vinay tells her that she should stop Rahul from leaving.

From superstars, the setting changes to ordinary men and women of which Ramdayal (Sohail Khan) and Phoolwati (Ishaa Koppikar) are a part of. A newly wed couple, they want to spend all their time in each other's arms, especially Ramdayal who has been waiting for such times forever. But then desires are not always meant to be fulfilled and what happens in the bargain are some funny moments that could even be termed tragic to an extent.

[edit] Reviews and Critics

The music was generally approved of by Rediff.com' as "awesome", [1] however, due to the concept of the movie, comparisons were drawn to Richard Curtis' ensemble film Love Actually.[1]

The film, however, has garnered a tepid response from the critics. Film critic Taran Adarsh called "a disjointed script, abstract style of narrating the story and excessive length" as the film's main deficiencies.[2] Rediff.com's Sukanya Verma called it "an ode to mediocrity, not love or cinema".[3] However the English Audience appreciated the film to the full extent. Poonam Joshi of Channel 4 described the film as "innovative and utterly hilarious" and saying it "redifines the genre of romantic comedy."[4] Though the film suffered from poor reviews it garnered a good response from audiences, earning approximately $1,000,009 US Dollars in the U.S.A. alone, grossing £349,000 in the U.K. and approximately 850,000 Australian Dollars in Australia.[citation needed] The film received a 3.5 Star rating on IndiaFM and a 4.5 Star rating on Channel 4.
