A Sign of the Times was a 1966 single by Petula Clark. Written by Tony Hatch, the uptempo pop number juxtaposed Clark's driving vocals with a powerful brass section. She introduced the tune on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 27, 1966.
The song indicated a burgeoning trend toward tempo in medlodic music, reaching #2 on Billboard's easy listening chart, as opposed to its #11 position on the Hot 100. In the late 1990s "A Sign of the Times" reached an entirely new audience in the United States when Clark's recording was featured in a series of popular Target Department Store commercials.
