TV.com summary

A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila is an American reality television dating game show similar to the TV show The Bachelor.[1] It premiered on October 9, 2007 on MTV starring Tila Tequila.[2] The series is a bisexual-themed reality dating show where 16 straight males and 16 lesbian female contestants live in Tila's house and compete for her attention and affection. The contestants were not aware of Tila's bisexuality until the end of the first episode, after ten contestants had been eliminated. The remaining contestants, both male and female, then shared the same bedroom for the rest of the series.[3] The ten episode series is produced by 495 Productions and MTV.[4] A Shot at Love II premiered on April 22, 2008.[5][6][7]

[edit] Ratings

The show debuted at No. 1 in its time period across all of cable in the network's target demographic of persons 18-34, averaging a 2.0 rating, and became MTV's second highest-rated series premiere for the year so far, behind Life of Ryan (August 27, 2007) and tied with Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County (August 15, 2007).[8]

The finale ended with 6.2 million viewers, making it MTV's most watched series telecast.[9]

[edit] Criticism and controversy

The show was at the heart of a heated online debate between Tila Tequila and conservative Christians after an article appeared on The Christian Post on September 13, 2007.[10] After seeing the article, Tequila wrote an impassioned response in her blog on September 28, 2007, criticizing churches for "bashing" the gay community while thanking God for saving her life.[11] Other oppositions to the show have come from the Culture and Media Institute,[12][13] Media Research Center[14] and Parents Television Council, which has named two episodes of the show the "Worst Cable Content of the Week".[15][16]

Several news outlets released an article accusing Tequila of having a steady boyfriend, claiming that the show is a sham,[17] and that she is not bisexual. They cite New York Post's Page Six article.[18][19][20] However, Tequila denied these rumors on her official website, stating:

First of all, let me just say that whomever they are getting their 'sources' from needs to be fired real fast! I find it absolutely absurd that they would even make such an ignorant statement such as 'She's made out with some girls in her past, as all girls have, but she is not bi at all.' ... That is such an absurd stereotype to place on all women and it just shows people how ignorant people can be![21]

On December 30, 2007, the winning contestant of the season, Bobby Banhart, posted a message on MySpace claiming:

She never called me after the last show and no one would give me her number.[22]

Bobby's full message:

well everyone wants to know so here it is she never called me after the last show and no one would give me her number so pretty much I feel like and ass but we are not 2gather u cant have a realationship bye urself ya know so now you all know and sometimes no matter how bad you want things to work out they dont and theres nothing you can do i tryed… thank you all.[sic] [23]

Tila offered her own reasoning for why they broke up:

We couldn’t see each other for 2 months after [the finale], and we only talked on the phone. Just naturally, people kind of move on with their lives. We tried our best to keep in touch and keep it going, but after a while, all of this camera stuff, he just couldn’t handle it.[sic] [24]

[edit] Spin-offs, supplements, and season 2

  • A Shot at Love II with Tila Tequila - The second season premiered on April 22, 2008 at 10pm, and follows the same bisexual-bachelorette formula. The premiere date was announced on Tila Tequila's Spring Break Fantasy Couple. It is set in a Hollywood Hills mansion (the same one as the second season of Rock of Love). It was planned to be aired after That's Amoré![25] Tequila announced at her Masquerade party, Tila Tequila's New Year's Eve Masquerade, that MTV greenlit her for a second season. During the Masquerade, she revealed that she and Bobby parted ways, which prompted suspicion that she would be the bachelorette during season two of A Shot at Love. News articles confirmed this. [26][27]
  • That's Amoré! - Due to his immense popularity, Domenico Nesci had the third spin-off. Also featured was former contestant Ashley, as Domenico's consigliere on the show, which Domenico officially announced on the reunion. It premiered on MTV on March 2, 2008 at 10/9c. [28]

Casting for both shows was handled by Doron Ofir Casting[29][25]
