[edit] Reception

A Mouthful topped the French charts in its first week.[2]
Pitchfork Media gave the album a good rating of 7.5 out of 10, noting "[A Mouthful] tries to balance the mature and the immature" and that "[Olivia B. Merilahti and Dan Levy] aren't shy about toying with musical categories (...) which compensates for the less-than-advisable inclusions, and the record is as ambitious and fun as any coming-out party in recent memory", but criticizing the lack of a better quality control.[3] Drowned in Sound were more positive and gave it a rating of 9 out of 10, saying the band is like "a female Eminem backed with a brass band" or "PJ Harvey on the moon", stating "the Dø’s success (...) is probably the fact that Dan Levy is a (not so) secret jazzer; there’s a musical dexterity and ability running through A Mouthful which makes them stand out from the crowd. (...) What this means is that every one of the 15 songs here is interesting in one way or another; compositionally, texturally, rhythmically, emotionally, or any one of a myriad of other ways" and ending the review by saying it's resolutely a pop album and that it is awesome. [4] French magazine Les Inrockuptibles gave a similarly positive review, calling them a "cool and promising band".[5]
